Cheaper Jaecoo J5 launched in South Africa – Pricing and features

Jaecoo has launched a new entry-level model for the J5 SUV in South Africa.

The new trim level- the Core – has a starting price of R339,900, making it R40,000 cheaper than the series’ previous base model – the R379,900 Vortex.

“Jaecoo South Africa has expanded the J5 range with the arrival of the new Core trim, a value-focused entry point designed to broaden the brand’s appeal without compromising on capability or quality,” said the company.

This also means that the J5 now has the same starting price as the Omoda C5, which recently received its own update.

Engine

The Core is powered by the same 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine as the rest of the lineup.

This generates a total of 115kW and 230Nm, which is sent to the front wheels via a continuously variable transmission (CVT).

It also has three driving modes for Eco, Normal, and Sport, and fuel consumption works out to an average of 7.5l/100km.

Features

Despite its entry-level positioning, the new J5 still comes with 17-inch alloy wheels, LED daytime running lights, automatic headlights, electric side mirrors, and rain-sensing wipers.

It also features a six-way manually adjustable driver’s seat, a four-way manually adjustable front passenger seat, black cloth upholstery, a multifunction steering wheel, automatic climate control, USB Type-A and Type-C charging ports, an 8-inch digital driver display, and a 9-inch portrait infotainment screen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

All of this is in addition to safety and assistance functions like ABS, electronic stability control, traction control, hill start assist, hill descent control, dual front airbags, Isofix child seat mounts, and rear parking sensors.

The boot can accommodate 480 litres of luggage, but this capacity can be expanded to 1,284 litres by folding down the 60:40 split rear seats.

The South African pricing for the updated Jaecoo J5 series is as follows:

• Jaecoo J5 Vortex – R379,000
• Jaecoo J5 Glacier – R439,900
• Jaecoo J5 Inferno – R479,900

This includes a 5-year/150,000km warranty, a 2-year/30,000km service plan, a 10-year/1-million km engine warranty, and a 5-year/unlimited km roadside assistance plan.
