New luxury SUV and sedan launching in South Africa in 2026

Volvo has released new information regarding its latest product – the EX60 SUV.

As its name implies, the EX60 will be the brand’s new midsize electric SUV, slotting between the smaller EX30 crossover and the flagship EX90 SUV.

The Swedish carmaker has been rather coy about the vehicle thus far, as it has not published any photos of the finished product beyond a handful of teaser images of the exterior silhouette.

However, it has finally revealed key details about the EX609’s powertrain, stating that it will have a “best-in-class range of 810km on a single charge,” based on the WLTP standard.

This means it will have the longest range of any electric Volvo created thus far.

To put this in perspective, the top-of-the-line EX30 Twin Motor Ultra has a 69kWh battery with a range of 460km.

The EX90 has a considerably larger 111kW power cell, but due to its size and weight, the SUV’s range is only extended to 616km.

Volvo has not disclosed the size of the EX60’s battery, though it did claim that it can add 340km of range in just 10 minutes when using a 400kW DC fast charger.

It stated that this makes recharging the car almost as fast as a fuel stop, which is a major step forward for electric vehicle ownership.

“The EX60 is designed to be a game-changer,” said Anders Bell, Chief Technology Officer at Volvo Cars.

“With our new electric vehicle architecture, we directly address the main worries that customers have when considering a switch to a fully electric car. The result is class-leading range and fast charging speeds, marking the end of range anxiety.”

The new electric platform integrates the battery directly with the structure of the vehicle, which improves efficiency by reducing excess weight.

“The EX60 is the first Volvo car built with the help of mega casting, whereby hundreds of smaller parts are replaced with a single, high-precision casting in the production process. This reduces weight, which again improves range and lets you go further.”

Volvo also stated that it is utilising a new battery cell design, which offers improved energy density and reduced heat, thereby enhancing charging speeds.

The Volvo EX60 will be officially unveiled on 21 January 2026, and the company has confirmed that it will arrive in South Africa in the mid-to-late third quarter this year.

Volvo’s plans for South Africa in 2026

The EX60 is not the only product Volvo has lined up for our market in 2026, as it will also launch a new sedan called the ES90.

The ES90 is an upmarket electric sedan that will go on sale here in the mid-to-late first quarter, with pricing to be announced closer to the time.

It will feature three different powertrains, starting with a Single Motor specification that sends 245kW and 480Nm down to the rear wheels.

This version has a 92kW battery with a range of 650km, and can accelerate from 0 to 100km/h in 6.9 seconds.

Next up is the Twin Motor, which gains a second e-motor over the front axle to produce a combined output of 330kW and 670Nm.

It has a larger 102kW battery with a range of 700km, and can sprint to 100km/h in 5.5 seconds.

Last but certainly not least is the Twin Motor Performance, which generates an incredible 500kW and 870Nm, allowing it to rocket to 100km/h in less than 4.0 seconds.

Volvo also plans to release a new Black Edition version of the facelifted XC60 and XC90 SUVs that launched in South Africa last year.

These models will presumably follow the same template as the brand’s previous Black Edition units, adding things like new alloy wheels, an Onyx Black metallic paint scheme, and gloss black accents to various components.

Unfortunately, the company has not provided a release date for these models.
