Omoda & Jaecoo have officially announced that the new C5 SHS (Super Hybrid System) will launch in South Africa in March 2026.
This will be the third hybrid model in Omoda’s catalogue, following the launch of the C7 SHS and C9 SHS last year.
While Omoda has yet to announce the vehicle’s pricing, it will undoubtedly be the company’s most affordable hybrid, slotting below the larger C7 and C9.
The automaker highlighted that the C5 is its best-selling model and that the new SHS is meant to further enhance the car’s appeal, offering significantly more power while also maintaining a frugal fuel economy.
“The upcoming C5 SHS represents the next step in expanding the Omoda lineup, introducing a sophisticated hybrid system that balances strong performance with impressive efficiency,” said Shannon Gahagan, National Brand and Marketing Manager at Omoda & Jaecoo South Africa.
“Paired with our advanced Super Hybrid System and a feature-rich, comfortable and stylish package, the C5 SHS offers excellent value for money while delivering a refined and responsible driving experience.”
It’s also worth noting that the C5 SHS means a Jaecoo J5 hybrid probably isn’t far behind, though the company has yet to officially confirm this.
What to expect

Omoda confirmed that the new crossover will be fitted with a 1.5-litre, four-cylinder engine paired with an electric motor and a 1.83kWh battery,
The result is a combined output of 165kW and 310Nm, which is sent to the front wheels via a dedicated hybrid transmission (DHT).
This is 15kW more than the Chery Tiggo Cross CSH (Chery Super Hybrid), solidifying the idea that Omoda’s vehicles are slightly more premium than its parent company’s offerings.
For reference, the standard C5, which uses a 1.5-litre turbo-petrol engine, generates 115kW and 230Nm.
This added power means the C5 SHS can accelerate from 0 to 100km/h in a brisk 7.9 seconds, though the main selling point of the hybrid is obviously its fuel consumption.
Thanks to its electrical underpinnings, the Chinese crossover achieves a combined fuel economy of 5.3l/100km, letting it travel more than 1,000km on a single tank.
“Omoda’s Super Hybrid System prioritises refinement, with the electric motor handling the bulk of propulsion and the petrol engine stepping in as required,” said the company.
“This approach results in a quieter, more relaxed driving experience, further enhanced by noise-suppressing glass.”
Other confirmed features include a dual 12.3-inch driver and infotainment screen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, leather upholstery, an eight-speaker stereo, an electric tailgate, and a sunroof.
It will also come with a driving assistance suite with 20 different functions, including blind spot detection, rear cross-traffic alert, and lane-change assist.
The full spec sheet will only be revealed at launch, but it’s fair to assume that the SHS will be positioned as the flagship of the series, meaning it should have all the kit found on the standard C5.
Assuming it has the same features as the C5 Style X, the new SHS will also have 17-inch alloy wheels, LED headlights and daytime running lights, keyless entry and start, a leather multifunction steering wheel, automatic air conditioning, cruise control, rear parking sensors, and a rearview camera.
