New Citroen Basalt goes on sale in South Africa – Pricing and features

Citroen has officially launched the new Basalt in South Africa.

The Basalt has been in the pipeline for quite some time, as it was first announced all the way back in August 2024 with an initial release window set for the first half of 2025.

While it may have been a long wait, Citroen’s new crossover coupe is finally here in two specifications, with prices starting at R354,900.

“The Basalt becomes the third model sourced from India under Citroën’s C-Cubed programme, joining the C3 and Aircross to complete the local C-Cubed line-up,” said the company.

Features

Named after the volcanic rock basalt, the French carmaker’s latest model has a fastback-style roofline, giving it a distinctive side profile.

The crossover coupe is 4,352mm in length, 1,765mm in width, and 1,593mm in height with a wheelbase of 2,651mm.

It also has 180mm of ground clearance, and the boot can swallow up to 470 litres of luggage.

Buyers can choose one of five exterior colours – Polar, White, Steel Grey, Garnet Red, Cosmo Blue, and Black Pearl – the first three of which are available with a two-tone black roof.

Equipment on the entry-level model, known as the Plus, starts with LED headlights, LED fog lamps, LED daytime running lights, auto-folding gloss black door mirrors, 16-inch alloy wheels, and a front and rear skid plate.

Inside, you’ll find a multifunction steering wheel, a keyless start button, automatic air conditioning with rear vents, four speakers, USB ports, a 12V socket, a 7-inch TFT driver display, and a 10-inch infotainment screen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

The Citroen also comes standard with central locking, electronic stability control, cruise control, six airbags, hill assist, ABS, tyre pressure monitoring, and rear parking sensors.

The higher-spec Max will then add a leather steering wheel, two tweeters, a reversing camera, and an auto-dimming rearview mirror.

Engine

Like the C3 and Aircross, the Basalt uses a 1.2-litre turbocharged petrol engine with an output of 81kW and 205Nm.

There is no manual option, as both the Plus and Max are fitted with a six-speed automatic gearbox that sends power to the front wheels.

This gives the crossover an average fuel consumption of 6.3l/100km.

Pricing

The South African pricing for the new Citroen Basalt is as follows:

Each purchase comes with a 5-year/100,000km warranty and a 4-year/60,000km service plan.
