The next-generation Toyota Hilux is set to go on sale in South Africa any day now, and we finally know what motorists can expect to pay for the highly-anticipated bakkie.
Toyota South Africa Motors (TSAM) previously confirmed that the ninth-generation Hilux will go on sale this June, so motorists can expect an official announcement over the coming days.
In the meantime, our sources at Duoporta Vehicle Information Specialists alerted us to the fact that the new Hilux is now listed on TSAM’s website, revealing the pricing for the initial roster.
There are no single-cab models for the time being, but there are currently two Xtra (extended) cab units and five double-cab units.
The brochure on TSAM’s website only lists the five double cabs, so it appears this relatively small selection will comprise the next-gen bakkie’s initial roster.
Bear in mind that the old Hilux has 37 variants across its single, extended, and double-cab body styles, leading us to believe that Toyota will follow Isuzu’s strategy, producing older models as a more affordable alternative for business fleets.
New variants will undoubtedly be added over time, but for now, the Hilux is listed in seven specifications, and prices start at R658,500.
What to expect

While this is the new, ninth-gen Hilux, Toyota has opted to stick with its tried-and-trusted 2.8-litre GD-6 turbocharged diesel engine producing 150kW and 500Nm.
This powertrain is found on all of the new models, meaning the 2.4-litre GD-6, and the 2.0-litre and 2.7-litre petrol options have been dropped from the range.
There is no manual option, either, as the pickup is exclusively mated to a six-speed automatic transmission.
Buyers do, however, have a choice of rear-wheel-drive (RWD) or four-wheel-drive (4×4) variants.
The Xtra Cab, which is currently limited to a single Raider X specification, is available with either a RWD or 4×4 setup.
The five-seater models, meanwhile, start with the SRX trim, which also has both options.
This is followed by the Raider X, which is only sold as a 4×4, and the range-topping Legend, which also has two versions.
One other important detail to note is that the Legend models feature mild-hybrid (MHEV) technology with a 48V electric motor and battery, which helps to improve fuel efficiency during acceleration.
Next, we can look at the brochure to get a sense of each model’s equipment list.
The base SRX trim starts things off with 17-inch steel wheels, a full-sized steel spare wheel, a shark fin antenna, LED headlights, LED daytime running lights, LED front fog lamps, electric side mirrors, and side steps.
Inside, it has electric windows, a lockable glove box, manually-adjustable fabric seats, a vinyl gear stick, a urethane multifunction steering wheel, manual air conditioning, four speakers, a 12V socket, USB C ports, an analogue driver display, and an 8-inch infotainment screen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
It also comes with a reverse camera, ABS with brake assist, a limited-slip differential, vehicle stability control, and side, curtain, driver, passenger, and driver knee airbags.
Upgrading to the mid-range Raider X will then add 17-inch alloys, a front spoiler, rear LED fog lights, keyless start, silver door handles, dual-zone climate control, a leather steering wheel and gearstick, eight speakers, a wireless charger, a larger 12.3-inch touchscreen, and a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster.
This version also has cruise control, hill descent control, tyre pressure monitoring, front and rear parking sensors, and Toyota’s Multi-Terrain Select system.
Finally, there’s the Legend, which gains rear privacy glass, an electrochromatic rearview mirror, an electronic handbrake, leather upholstery, a nine-speaker JBL stereo, a cooled storage box, and an electric driver’s seat.
Additionally, this trim level comes with adaptive cruise control, a panoramic camera system, blind spot detection, lane-keep assist, and rear cross-traffic alert.
