New Toyota GR 86 coming to South Africa

Toyota has confirmed that the new GR 86 will be coming to South Africa in the first quarter of 2022.

Only one model will be launching locally and final specifications will be confirmed closer to the launch date.

The new GR 86 gets a new look, a new interior, a new 2.4-litre engine, and a new spot in the Toyota line-up when it goes on sale.

It is now part of the Gazoo Racing family, which features cars such as the GR Supra and the GR Yaris.

Aggressively-styled air vents and 18-inch wheels lend it a sporty look, while smoother panels and lack of angles give it a more grown-up feel.

Luckily, however, it retains the light cluster between the exhaust outlets and nearly identical dimensions to the outgoing model.

As such, it sits at 1,310mm high, 1,775mm wide, and 4,265mm long.

Inside, the Toyota is treated to a 7-inch infotainment display, a digital instrument cluster, and fewer buttons.

Smartphone mirroring features are supported by the new infotainment system, and amenities include climate control and leather upholstery.

Subaru’s EyeSight system then provides ample safety features and colour accents with two-tone seats extend the sporty feeling to the inside.

Power

The new 86 is powered by a 2.4-litre Boxer engine that shows preliminary performance figures of 172kW and 250Nm of torque – but we do not know if that’s what it will produce when it gets here.

Functional air ducts and side-rocker panels assist with the dynamic characteristics of the 86, and handling response has been improved thanks to a 50% increase in torsional rigidity.

“These will help the new model achieve expected best-in-class handling and stability,” said Toyota.

Pricing and a specific launch date for the GR 86 have not been revealed.
