Six more months of R69 car licence disc renewals for South Africa

Motorists can renew their car licence discs for as little as R69 for at least another six months in South Africa.

First National Bank (FNB) has extended the promotional period for its online licence renewals, which currently provides the lowest rate for a new disc of any service in the country.

The promotion was initially launched in March 2024 and set to expire at the end of June, but the bank has chosen to extend the discounted rate until the end of the year.

The cheapest licence disc renewals of 2024

FNB already has one of the most affordable licence disc renewal services in South Africa at a cost of R99 for both the admin and delivery fee, but it slashed the price by R30 to just R69 when its promo was introduced in March.

Customers can use their FNB banking app to load their car details onto the nav>Car platform, which allows them to make an in-app payment using their account, a credit card, or eBucks.

“This service from FNB is offered in collaboration with the Road Traffic Management Corporation, with no paperwork, if you are the registered owner of the vehicle,” said FNB.

Furthermore, users can obtain R99 worth of eBucks provided they agree to a no-obligation car insurance quote from FNB Insurance.

It should be noted that the R69 price tag being offered only covers the cost of the renewal service and not the disc itself, which is determined based on your vehicle’s weight class and its province of registration.

However, the advantage of an online system like the one provided by FNB is that it does not require any paperwork, and the new disc can be delivered to your door, eliminating the need to queue at a driver’s licence testing centre.

FNB launched its online renewal service in March 2023 to great success, as it has since accumulated more than 100,000 new vehicle uploads during this time.

Of this number, 107,000 users have completed a disc renewal on the platform.

The banking app also allows customers to get free vehicle evaluation estimates, pay traffic fines, find comprehensive insurance, and purchase vehicle-related products and services like dent protection and extended warranties.

Prior to the initially proposed promotion cut-off date of 30 June 2024, FNB told MyBroadband that it was considering an extension to the discount owing to the cost constraints that many households are currently facing in South Africa.

You can compare the cost of various licence disc renewal services in the table below:

Service Availability Admin fee Delivery fee Total cost
FNB Nationwide Included Included R99 (R69 promo)
Natis Online Nationwide Included R99.00 R99
South African Post Office Nationwide R72.00 R75.00 R147
PayCity (Discontinued) City of Cape Town, Free State, Gauteng, Limpopo, Mpumalanga, Northern Cape, North West Included Included R166.75
Shoprite Money Market Nationwide R110.25 R74.75 R185
Spar Select stores R199.00 Included R199
Renewonline Gauteng, Limpopo R100.00 R115.00 R215
Disky Nationwide R169.00 R70.00 R239

FNB’s non-discounted rate is still one of the cheapest in the country, as it previously slashed the cost from R199 to R99 in 2023.

It’s also worth noting that PayCity recently discontinued its service, removing one of the options available to consumers in most provinces.
