The official South African pricing of the new BMW M5 is set at R2,690,000.
Revealed in June, the athletic sedan is scheduled to make its public debut in South Africa in the fourth quarter of 2024 and is expected to be on display at the BMW M Fest in the final week of October.
For the latest generation, the M5 has seen a number of sporting enhancements including a powerful new plug-in hybrid drivetrain as well as an exclusive design that hones its aerodynamic capabilities.
M electrified
The new M5 boasts a 4.4-litre, twin-turbo, V8 petrol mill that generates a substantial 430kW and 750Nm by its lonesome, which is complemented by an electric motor with 145kW and 280Nm of potential.
Together, the system produces an astounding 535kW and 1,000Nm which is relayed to the tarmac via an eight-speed automatic gearbox and the M xDrive all-wheel-drive system with an Active M Differential on the rear axle.
The outcome of the formidable setup is that the hefty BMW can sprint from 0-100km/h in just 3.5 seconds and 0-200km/h in 10.9 seconds. Top speed is electronically limited to 250km/h, but may be raised to 305km/h with the optional M Driver’s package.
Courtesy of an 18.6kWh battery pack, the M5 is capable of travelling 69km on electricity alone at speeds of up to 140km/h, and it can be topped up from 0-100% in three hours and 15 minutes using a 7.4kW AC plug.
Bolstering the M5’s arsenal is the standard fitment of adaptive M suspension with bespoke tuning that offers noticeably sharper handling than the normal 5 Series models.
Rear-wheel steering is included, too, which turns the rear wheels by up to 1.5 degrees for extra manoeuvrability at low speeds and more stability at high speeds.
Also installed at no additional cost is a sonorous Sports exhaust system with electrically controlled, continuously adjustable flaps and four 100mm exhaust tips in black chrome.
When the car is in full-electric mode, the IconicSounds Electric package takes over from the physical exhausts to provide authentic soundscapes that match the movements of the accelerator.
Completing the enhancements are M Compound brakes and M light-alloy wheels wrapped in high-performance tyres measuring 20 inches at the front axle and 21 inches at the rear.
Moving inside, the sports sedan comes with a newly designed, flat-bottom M leather steering wheel with illuminated buttons, M multifunction seats, a heads-up display, and the curved Live Cockpit Professional system made up of a 12.3-inch digital driver’s display and a 14.9-inch infotainment screen.
Also standard is Merino leather upholstery, four-zone airconditioning, heated front seats, ambient lighting with M-specific elements, a panoramic sunroof, integrated navigation, a Bowers & Wilkins surround sound system, a wireless charging tray, keyless entry and start, and automatic tailgate operation.
As can be expected, the BMW additionally provides a range of assistance systems namely front-collision warning, lane-departure warning including lane return with steering assistance, evasion assist, attentiveness assist, speed limit info, and the parking and reversing assistant.
