New Fiat 500 launched in South Africa – Pricing and features

Fiat has introduced the updated 500 to South Africa with a new naming convention and new engine.

The revised hatchback is now sold in base and Style trim levels with the latter available in both hard-top and cabriolet body styles.

Buyers interested in the new Fiat will have to part ways with a minimum of R308,900, going up to R379,900 for the range-topping convertible.

Everything new

Perhaps the most important addition to the new 500 is a larger 1.2-litre, naturally aspirated petrol engine that replaces the turbocharged 875cc block of the outgoing model.

The more substantial motor churns out 51kW and 102Nm allowing the city car to sprint to 100km/h in 12.9 seconds on to a top speed of 160km/h, with average fuel usage pegged at 4.8l/100km.

Gone is the five-speed manual gearbox of before as well, as all variants now feature a five-speed automatic.

Surprisingly, the old powertrain was slightly more capable than its replacement despite its smaller displacement. It churned out 63kW and 145Nm which shot the 500 to triple-digit speeds in 11.0 seconds and enabled it to reach 173km/h while reporting a noticeably lower fuel spend of 4.0l/100km.

Standard kit in the new Fiat comprises 15-inch alloy wheels, LED daytime running lights, a multifunction steering wheel, a multi-info driver’s display, a 7-inch media system with Bluetooth, hill-hold assist, a speed limiter, electronic stability control, Isofix child-seat anchors, and seven airbags.

The pricier Style example further comes with 16-inch alloys, fog lamps, a glass roof, split-folding rear seats, automatic climate control, cruise control, and rear parking sensors.

Boot capacity for the 500 is rated at 185 litres, expanding to 688 litres with the rear bench folded flat.

Price

The South African pricing and model line-up of the new Fiat 500 are as follows:

Each purchase carries a 5-year/100,000km warranty as standard.
