Ford South Africa’s best month in 3 years – The numbers

Ford South Africa had an excellent month in November 2024, hitting two massive sales goals.

The carmaker not only managed to break a new export record for the Ranger, but it also achieved its highest domestic sales in more than three years.

A good month for Ford

The Blue Oval has a production facility in Silverton on the outskirts of Pretoria, where it manufactures the Ranger bakkie.

Las month, the company was able to send a grand total of 10,574 units overseas to various markets in Europe, which is the highest export figure achieved to date since the current-gen models first went into production in December 2022.

This is an important milestone not just for Ford, but for South Africa’s automotive industry as a whole, as export numbers have been dropping at an alarming rate over the course of 2024.

A primary reason for this stems from the fact that South Africa’s various original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) primarily export to Europe, which has been struggling with high inflation and reduced economic activity.

This has resulted in reduced demand for new vehicles, which is a big problem for the nation’s OEMs since roughly 80% of all cars made here are meant for export.

The Ranger’s excellent sales in November therefore point to an improvement in market conditions, helping to sustain one of South Africa’s largest industries.

Ford’s other victory in November is much closer to home, selling as many as 3,071 units in South Africa.

This is the highest sales number the brand has experienced since June 2021, showing that local consumers are more willing to spend money on a new car – a positive sign for the country’s economic recovery.

This was enough to secure Ford’s place as the fourth best-selling automaker on the market, thanks in large part to the Ranger, which made up 2,248 of the final total.

In fact, the Ranger has a 24.9% share of the light commercial vehicle segment, and is the country’s top-selling double-cab model.

Other badges that performed well last month include the Territory (326 units), the Everest (282 units), and the new Mustang GT, which sold 65 units despite its high price tag.
