New Toyota Corolla Cross for South Africa – Pricing and features

The facelifted Toyota Corolla Cross is hitting South African showrooms later this month.

As before, it will be available in seven specifications across the Xi, XS, XR, and GR-Sport trims, with prices starting at R414,800.

This reflects a modest R6,400 increase over the outgoing version.

What you get

The refreshed Corolla Cross was on the receiving of light cosmetic tweaks, taking the form of a new honeycomb-pattern front grille, a textured chrome strip on the nose, revised head and taillight signatures, sequential turning signals on the upper-tier variants, and an updated selection of alloy wheels.

A new range of paints is available, too, including the flashy Desert Gold pictured in the promotional images.

Meanwhile, the GR-Sport derivatives were left mostly untouched except for the new lighting fixtures.

The spec sheet of the evergreen Toyota has also seen a few welcome additions.

The base Xi is now delivered with 17-inch alloy wheels, LED headlights, smart entry door handles, a multifunction steering wheel, a 4.2-inch multi-information driver’s display, a touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, cruise control, a reverse camera, rear parking sensors, hill-assist control, and five airbags.

The mid-spec XS further brings dual-zone climate control, a leather steering wheel, a 7-inch driver’s screen, a rear-seat armrest, partial leather upholstery, front parking sensors, rain-sensing wipers, and black roof rails.

At the top of the pack sits the XR and GR-Sport options, which both come with a fully digital 12.3-inch gauge cluster, Black/Terra Rosa seat wrappings, an electrochromatic rear-view mirror, an electric tailgate with a kick sensor, a panoramic-view monitor, lane-trace assist, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, automatic high-beam functionality, and 18-inch alloys.

The GR-Sport also benefits from more aggressive exterior styling underscored by unique bumpers, a sporty grille, distinctive wheels, GR-specific cabin finishes, and bespoke suspension.

Buyers of the Corolla Cross still have two engine options to choose from, comprising a 1.8-litre petrol or petrol-hybrid setup, both completed with a continuously variable transmission channeling drive to the front axle.

The non-electrified variants churn out 103kW and 172Nm and return a combined fuel usage of 6.8l/100km.

The hybrids generate 90kW and achieve an improved 4.3l/100km efficiency reading.

Toyota does not disclose the torque statistics of its hybrid vehicles due to the “complexity” of the technology, so it’s unclear how it stacks up against the pure petrol variant in this regard.
