The Department of Petroleum and Mineral Resources (DPMR) has released the official fuel price adjustments that will take effect Wednesday, 5 February 2025.
Unfortunately for motorists, both the price of petrol and diesel are going up this month by a considerable margin, with diesel being hit particularly hard.
Not great news for road users
Both grades of petrol are being increased by more than 80c per litre this February, while diesel is seeing a hike of more than R1 per litre, marking the fourth consecutive month of fuel price increases in South Africa.
The hikes are the result of an increase in the international trading price of Brent Crude Oil, which went from $72.78 to $77.41 per barrel during the period under review.
Oil prices were driven up by cold weather in the northern hemisphere creating a demand for more heating resources, and increased economic output from China.
At the same time, supply has been affected by OPEC’s decision to delay its production increases until April 2025, an issue that is likely to be compounded by new international sanctions against Russia and Iran.
The end result is a higher contribution to the Basic Fuel Price of 46.06c per litre for petrol and 66.26c per litre for diesel.
Another reason for the raised prices is the rand’s poor performance against the US dollar, as the exchange rate rose from R18.11/dollar to R18.73/dollar during the period in question.
This contributed a further 36.85c per litre and 39.58c per litre to the Basic Fuel Price of petrol and diesel, respectively.
In line with the provisions of the Self-Adjusting Slate Levy Mechanism, the Slate Levy on petrol and diesel will remain at 0.00c/l with effect from 05 February 2025.
With all of these factors in mind, this is how much the price of each fuel will climb this February:
- Petrol 93 – Increase of 82c a litre
- Petrol 95 – Increase of 82c a litre
- Diesel 0.05% – Increase of R1.05 a litre
- Diesel 0.005% – Increase of R1.01 a litre
The table below indicates how the official fuel price adjustments for February will reflect at the pump:
Fuel type | Inland | Coastal |
---|---|---|
Petrol 93 | R22.16 | R21.37 |
Petrol 95 | R22.41 | R21.62 |
Diesel 0.05% | R20.34 | R19.55 |
Diesel 0.005% | R20.45 | R19.69 |
