Ford has released the new Tourneo Custom Active into the South African market, which assumes the role of the entry-level model in the range.
The new Active sets the barrier to entry to the Tourneo Custom series at R1,050,000, reflecting a drop of R26,000 in comparison to the existing Trend model.
What you get
To achieve the lower price point, Ford “removed some of the ‘nice-to-haves’ [of the Trend] but not essential interior features,” the company said.
The items foregone comprise the dual-zone climate control, heated front seats, driver and passenger armrests, and wireless charger in the Trend. Apart from this, the vans are virtually identical.
Standard kit on the new base Tourneo Custom Active thus includes LED headlights with daytime running lights, keyless entry and start, single-zone climate control, an 8-inch configurable digital driver’s display, a 13-inch infotainment hub with wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, and USB ports for both front and rear passengers.
Ford’s Driver Assistance Pack is also fitted, encompassing intelligent speed assistance with cruise control and speed sign recognition, collision mitigation, a driver impairment monitor, lane-keep assist, front and rear parking sensors, a rear-view camera, tyre-pressure monitoring, hill-launch assist, and ABS with emergency braking.
Occupant protection is then taken care of through front and side airbags for the driver and passenger, rear curtain airbags, Isofix child-seat mounting on all three seats in the second row as well as the two outboard seats in the third row, and two-stage door unlocking and power door dead-locking functions.

Like its sibling, the new Tourneo Custom Active boasts a flexible track-mounted seating system for the second and third rows that allows the cabin layout to be tuned according to the owner’s unique requirements.
There are three second-row seats that can be moved independently, and the third row has a two/one split.
The tracked seating enables customers to slide the second and third row seats forward, or back along notched tracks set into the rear cabin floor.
The seats can also be rotated to create a six-person conference layout, or removed from the vehicle to free up a massive 6.8 cubic metre load volume.
Cosmetically, the main differentiating feature on the Tourneo Custom Active versus the Trend is the deletion of privacy glass for the side and rear windows, with a light tint applied instead.
The dual sliding side doors are now equipped with pull-up blinds inside that provide a measure of privacy for passengers.

Propelling the new people mover is a 2.0-litre, turbo-diesel plant producing 100kW and 360Nm.
The power unit is mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission that twists the front axle, and four selectable modes are available to tailor the vehicle’s driving characteristics to your liking, namely Normal, Eco, Slippery, and Tow/Haul.
Using the latter mode, the Tourneo Custom range can tow a trailer of up to 2,500kg.
Average fuel usage comes in at 7.4l/100km, lending the Tourneo Custom a driving range of up to 946km.
The Ford moreover comes with a 20-litre AdBlue tank, which is a diesel exhaust additive that transforms nitrogen oxide into harmless nitrogen and water.
