First-of-its-kind used car website launched in South Africa

The Africar Group and Auto24.africa have announced the official launched of EV24.africa, the largest pan-African electric vehicle (EV) marketplace.

The new platform gives buyers in all 54 African countries access to over 200 EV models from more than 25 global brands such as BYD, Citroen, Dongfeng, Fiat, Leapmotor, Peugeot, Tesla, Toyota, and Wuling.

“The launch of EV24.africa builds on the experience and success of AUTO24.africa, which has already sold electric vehicles in over 15 African countries, including Morocco, Senegal, Côte d’Ivoire, Rwanda, Gabon, Republic of the Congo, Benin, Togo and several others,” said Axel Peyriere, co-founder and CEO of AUTO24.africa.

“AUTO24.africa has established itself as a trusted platform for automotive sales, providing expertise in vehicle certification, logistics, and customer service. With this strong foundation, EV24.africa is positioned to become the go-to marketplace for EV buyers across Africa.”

Simplifying EV purchases

EV24.africa recognises that the adoption rate of EVs in Africa is gaining momentum but, amongst others, remains hindered by the complexity of customs regulations, which vary significantly from one country to another.

The platform intends to address this challenge by providing clear, up-to-date information on customs duties, tax exemptions, and available incentives to its customers via a network of logistics partners, forwarding agents, and local teams.

It highlights that many African countries including Cameroon, Côte d’Ivoire, Ethiopia, Morocco, Rwanda, and Senegal have incentive structures in place for importing EVs, with adoption anticipated to increase in these regions.

In South Africa, specifically, it noted that import duties remain high at 25%, “though industrial tax credits and regulatory reforms are under consideration.”

“Thanks to in-depth, country-specific regulatory analysis, EV24.africa enables its clients to streamline the importation process, secure fiscal benefits, and eliminate uncertainty in their transition to electric mobility across the African continent,” said Peyriere.

The company aims to eliminate barriers to EV ownership by offering:

  • Dedicated customer support to guide buyers through the entire journey
  • The largest selection of EVs in Africa, catering to different needs and budgets
  • Expert assistance in importation and regulatory compliance, tailored to each country’s policies
  • Transparent pricing and clear delivery processes, ensuring customers know exactly what they are paying for

“Africa is ready for electric vehicles, and EV24.africa is here to make the transition smooth and accessible,” concluded Peyriere.

“Our mission is to provide a trusted, transparent, and competitive EV marketplace for buyers across the continent.”

Importing used cars to South Africa

For locals interested in using EV24.africa, it should be pointed out that used cars may only be imported to South Africa under strict conditions.

As per the International Trade Administration Commission, the importing of vehicles is only allowed under the following circumstances:

  • The vehicle was owned by an immigrant in another country prior to getting a permanent residence permit issued by the Department of Home Affairs.
  • The vehicle was owned by a returning South African who had it registered in their name for at least six months while employed abroad.
  • A physically disabled person requires a specially modified vehicle and can supply relevant supporting documents.
  • The imported car is a racing vehicle and the applicant is a national or international racing driver.
  • The car is considered a vintage model, being 40 years or older, or is regarded as a collectable.

Should a particular model not satisfy one or more of these conditions, the application for importation will not be considered.
