BMW’s most affordable sedan goes on sale in South Africa – Pricing

BMW has officially launched its most affordable sedan in South Africa in the form of the new 2 Series Gran Coupe.

The Gran Coupe shares the same platform as the next-gen 1 Series hatchback, and is available in three specifications with prices starting at R733,559.

Performance

Like the 1 Series, the new 2 Series is offered with one of two powertrains.

The first is the 218, comprising a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine that sends 115kW and 230Nm down to the front wheels.

This is enough to let the sedan race from 0 to 100km/h in 8.5 seconds and reach a top speed of 226km/h.

Gear changes are handles by a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox, resulting in an average fuel consumption return of 6.4l/100km.

If this isn’t enough, you can pick up the flagship M235, which benefits from a 2.0-litre turbo block that can throw down 225kW and 450Nm.

It uses the same gearbox as the 218 but features the xDrive all-wheel-drive system for better grip and power delivery.

The AWD setup, combined with the potent drivetrain, means the M235 can rocket to 100km/h in a respectable 4.9 seconds before capping out at a max speed of 250km/h.

Of course, this does mean you’ll pay slightly more for fuel, as the sporty model drinks 7.8l/100km.

Features

The Gran Coupe’s appearance is very similar to that of its hatchback sibling, with a new set of LED headlights and daytime running lights that flank the brand’s signature kidney grille.

It also has a new selection of light alloy rims that start at 17 inches in size, and a revamped pair of LED taillamps.

By default, the tailpipes are hidden behind the rear bumper, but the optional M Sport package adds a set of visible quad exhausts.

Customers can choose from one of nine different paint schemes, and the list of extras includes a contrasting black roof and Matrix LED headlights.

Inside, the cabin is furnished with sustainable materials such as eco-friendly leather-free upholstery, which is available in one of four two-tone colour schemes.

On request, this can be swapped out for Venganza/Alcantara trim with contrast stitching.

The front seats are electronically adjustable with heating functions, and the dashboard features a new dual curved display with a 10.25-inch digital instrument gauge and a 10.7-inch infotainment screen.

The dual-screen runs on BMW’s latest Operating System 9, which offers voice commands, BMW Maps with cloud-based navigation, over-the-air software updates, and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity.

The Gran Coupe also comes standard with automatic climate control, ambient lighting, and driving assistance functions such as front-collision warning, lane-departure warning, exit warning, traffic sign recognition, and a Parking Assistant with a surround-view camera and parking sensors.

Anyone who purchases the optional M Sport package can additionally look forward to M Sport seats with massage and lumbar support functions, an M Sport leather steering wheel with paddle shifters, larger 18-inch alloys, and adaptive M suspension.

The M Sport package is included as standard on the M235.
