The Ford Ranger was the top pick for motorists in the used car market this April, with 1,724 individuals taking one home.
While this number is slightly less than the 1,753 units sold in March, the Ranger nevertheless holds a significant lead in the pre-owned sector.
In comparison, the Toyota Hilux found 1,435 new owners last month, putting the Ford 289 units ahead.
Even so, the Toyota’s figures are still very high, as it landed in second place ahead of the VW Polo Vivo, which sold 1,158 examples.
The Vivo, therefore, holds the crown as the nation’s favourite second-hand passenger car while placing third overall.
Next up is the Vivo’s sibling, the Polo, which only sold one less model with a total of 1,158.
Fifth place, meanwhile, once again went to the Toyota Fortuner, leading the sales for pre-owned SUVs with 697 customers.
One notable change from March is that the Toyota Starlet moved up the rankings from ninth to sixth place with a respectable 502 purchases.
The Suzuki Swift then dropped down to seventh with 475 units, while the Mercedes-Benz C-Class is holding onto its spot in eighth with 438 sales.
A new entry to the top 10 this time around is the Toyota Corolla Cross, which jumped into ninth place with 436 units.
This meant that the Isuzu D-Max was pushed down to 10th with 381 sales, while the Nissan NP200 was knocked out of the rankings altogether.
According to AutoTrader, a grand total of 28,675 used cars were sold in South Africa in April 2025, representing a fractional year-on-year (YoY) decrease of 0.2% from the same month last year.
It’s also 4.1% less than March’s figures, though this is attributed to the month’s high number of public holidays that reduced business hours.
Even with the lower sales, the combined value of all the cars sold came to R12.06 billion, a 3% YoY increase from April 2024.
The higher revenue is chiefly due to an increase in the average price of used cars, which went up by R3,083 to reach a new total of R420,771.
Toyota and VW are still the most popular second-hand brands in the country with YoY increases of 4% and 3%, respectively.
Ford saw a larger jump of 7%, and Suzuki had the biggest YoY improvement at 15%.
