Mercedes-Benz’s fastest-accelerating AMG goes on sale in South Africa – Pricing

Mercedes-Benz has officially launched the new AMG GT 63 S E Performance Coupe in South Africa.

The latest model from the brand’s coveted AMG racing division, the GT 63 is one of the most powerful vehicles in the company’s lineup, boasting the fastest 0-100km/h acceleration figure to date.

Of course, it wouldn’t be a flagship AMG model without an equally impressive price tag, as the new S E Performance will set you back a grand total of R4,369,287.

This includes Mercedes’ standard 2-year/unlimited-kilometre warranty and a 5-year/100,000km maintenance plan.

Racing prowess

Like many of the carmaker’s recent models, the new coupe features a hybrid powertrain.

In the case of the GT 63, you can expect a 4.0-litre bi-turbo V8 petrol block, which is supported by an AMG Electric Drive motor.

The end result is a mind-blowing output of 600kW and 1,420Nm, which makes contact with the tarmac via the fully-variable AMG Performance 4Matic+ all-wheel-drive system.

The e-motor produces 150kW all by itself, and makes use of an electronic two-speed transmission and a mechanical rear axle limited slip differential.

The 400V battery that powers the e-motor is located above the rear axle to improve weight distribution, and features a new direct cooling system that can reduce the temperature of all 560 cells individually through the use of non-flammable coolant liquid.

While the hybrid system is primarily intended to improve performance, it does also allow for short-distance fully-electric driving, as the battery has a capacity of 6.1kW.

This is enough to let the Mercedes travel for 13km before owners need to top up the cells using the 3.7kW AC charger.

As for what all of these impressive stats translate to in a real-world setting, the GT 63 can sprint to 100km/h in a blistering 2.8 seconds – the fastest of any AMG model.

It doesn’t stop there, literally, as the coupe can reach a staggering top speed of 320km/h.

Other useful additions include AMG’s Active Ride Control suspension with semi-active roll stabilization, and rear axle steering that improves the car’s maneuverability.

Drivers can also pick one of eight AMG Dynamic Select driving modes for Electric, Battery Hold, Comfort, Slippery, Sport, Sport+, RACE, and Individual.

These programmes can be selected via the AMG buttons on the steering wheel, or through the central display.

The flagship model also comes with an active aerodynamic element integrated into the underbody of the front engine, which can extend downwards by 40mm at speeds exceeding 80km/h.

This invokes the Venturi Effect, which channels air to ensure downforce that prevents the front axle from lifting up.

Additionally, there’s an extendable rear spoiler integrated into the boot lid, which adjusts its angle depending on the car’s speed to optimize driving stability or reduce air resistance.

A set of AMG ceramic high-performance composite brakes are included as well, which feature bronze-coloured fixed calipers at the front.

In terms of styling, the GT 63 boasts a grooved twin trapezoidal tailpipe, a red model badge, E Performance badges on the sides, 20-inch AMG light alloy rims with a 10-spoke design, and a pair of slim LED headlights and daytime running lights.

Similar attention has been given to the interior, which uses a cockpit design with a portrait infotainment screen and a digital driver display running the brand’s latest MBUX software.

It also has a set of electronically adjustable AMG Sports seats with massage functions, integrated headrests, and ventilation

The seats are decked out in Nappa leather with diamond quilting and a contrast stitching pattern in either red or yellow.

Buyers can also opt to install 2+2 seating should they need to carry more passengers.
