Official petrol price increases for July announced

The Department of Petroleum and Mineral Resources has published the official fuel price adjustments that will take effect today on Wednesday, 2 July 2025.

Unfortunately, both petrol and diesel are going up this month, with diesel being hit particularly hard.

Petrol will increase by a minimum of 55c per litre, while diesel users will be paying at least 82c per litre more than they were before.

The price hikes are primarily driven by the tumultuous geopolitical events of the past month, resulting in volatile oil prices.

The line goes up

The recent conflict between Israel, Iran and the United States led to fluctuations in the international trading price of oil for most of June.

This meant that the international product price for petrol, diesel, and illuminating paraffin increased during the period under review.

Consequently, South Africa’s expected fuel price adjustments swung from a slight decrease to a fairly substantial increase this month.

The silver lining is that the rand performed surprisingly well over the same period, showing resilience in the face of uncertain market conditions.

Between 30 May and 26 June 2025, the rand appreciated against the US dollar, going from R18.11/dollar to R17.84/dollar.

A better exchange rate means it is cheaper to import oil, leading to a lower contribution to the Basic Fuel Price (BFP).

The BFP for July is 15.71c/l for petrol, and 16.35c/l for diesel.

In line with the provisions of the Self-Adjusting Slate Levy Mechanism, the Slate Levy on petrol and diesel will remain at 0.00 c/l with effect from 2 July 2025.

With all of this in mind, this is how South Africa’s fuel prices are being adjusted for July 2025:

  • Petrol 93 – Increase of 55c a litre
  • Petrol 95 – Increase of 52c a litre
  • Diesel 0.05% – Increase of 82c a litre
  • Diesel 0.005% – Increase of 84c a litre
