Official petrol price decrease for September

The Department of Petroleum and Mineral Resources has published the official fuel price adjustments that will take effect tomorrow on Wednesday, 3 September 2025.

The good news is that both petrol and diesel are being reduced this month, though only one is seeing a meaningful change.

Petrol is functionally unchanged, as it is only dropping by an imperceptible 4c per litre.

Diesel, on the other hand, is thankfully receiving a more noteworthy reduction of 56c per litre.

What you’re paying for fuel this month

The price of oil came under pressure in August as a result of the Trump administration’s ongoing tariff and trade wars with other nations, creating market uncertainty.

At the same time, OPEC+ countries increased their output, leading to a greater supply.

While the global diesel shortage is still present, international pricing has normalised, helping to bring the petrol and diesel price recovery closer together.

This follows August’s adjustments where petrol was reduced by 28c while diesel saw an increase of 65c per litre.

Brent Crude oil prices decreased from $69.06 to $67.01 per barrel during the period under review.

The rand also showed resilience despite the new tariffs imposed on South Africa, to the surprise of economists.

The rand maintained a relatively strict margin of between R17.50 and R17.80 per US dollar, thanks in part to a weaker dollar.

All of these factors led to a lower contribution to the Basic Fuel Price of 1.88c per litre for petrol and 54.35c per litre for diesel.

In line with the provisions of the Self-Adjusting Slate Levy Mechanism, the Slate Levy on petrol and diesel will remain at 0.00 c/l with effect from 3 September 2025.

Based on these factors, this is how South Africa’s fuel prices are being adjusted for September 2025:

  • Petrol 93 – Decrease of 4c per litre
  • Petrol 95 – Decrease of 4c per litre
  • Diesel 0.05% – Decrease of 56c per litre
  • Diesel 0.005% – Decrease of 57c per litre
