The affordable crossover dominating Chinese car sales in South Africa

The Chery Tiggo 4 Pro and its facelifted equivalent, the Tiggo Cross, are the best-selling Chinese cars in South Africa by a wide margin, moving nearly twice as many units as its closest competitor.

The Tiggo 4 and Cross, which Chery reports as a single combined figure, sold 2,210 units in July 2026, making it the third-most popular car in the country behind the Toyota Hilux and VW Polo Vivo.

This is according to a list compiled by The Citizen, using monthly sales data reported by the Automotive Business Council (Naamsa).

In comparison, the second best-selling Chinese car was the Haval Jolion, which found 1,132 customers last month.

This was followed by the Jetour T2 in third place with 925 sales, and the Omoda C5 in fourth place with 889 sales.

Fifth place was then taken by a bakkie, the GWM P-Series, which sold 536 units. Two more Jetour models, the Dashing and T1, came sixth and seventh with 482 and 451 sales, respectively.

Eighth place is a new entry, as the Jaecoo J5 surged into the top 10 with 367 sales, putting it ahead of the last two models, the Chery Tiggo 7 and Haval H6, which both sold 360 units.

Interestingly, this means that all the cars in the top 10 either come from the Chery Group or the GWM Group, underscoring the lead these two brands have over their Chinese rivals.

The top 10 Chinese cars moved a combined 7,612 units, representing 14.76% of the 51,558 cars sold in South Africa last month.
