No need to panic over South Africa’s frequent car recalls – According to dealer’s association

Thousands of vehicles in South Africa have been subject to safety recalls in 2026, already eclipsing last year’s totals, but there’s no reason to panic.

While frequent vehicle safety recalls can cause concern for car owners, they demonstrate accountability and commitment to quality, safety and customer care.

This is the view of the National Automobile Dealers’ Association (NADA), which noted that a vehicle recall is a proactive measure when a potential quality or safety concern is identified in a specific batch of vehicle components.

Car manufacturers issue recall notifications through the National Consumer Commission (NCC) to inspect, update or replace affected parts and prevent components from failing on the road.

These affected or faulty components may range from something as simple and easy-to-fix as a loose seat frame to more severe issues like handbrake faults, and even manufacturing faults requiring engine replacement.

That said, owners of vehicles no longer covered by an Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) warranty and those serviced outside franchised dealership networks risk missing essential updates.

According to NADA National Director Ashley Samuel, when a car is booked into a franchised dealership, this is something that gets checked before any work is completed.

The service advisor would typically check the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) against the manufacturer’s central database for any open recalls,” he explained.

“If there’s an open recall, the dealership carries out the required work seamlessly.”

However, Samuel added that if a vehicle is maintained through an independent workshop, that automated process might not be present.

“That is why we strongly encourage car owners, particularly those who service their vehicle outside the franchised dealership network, to take a proactive step and check their vehicle’s status,” he noted.

Repairs are carried out free of charge

The Dealers’ Association explained that recalls reflect commitment to quality and safety, since a recall notice does not mean a vehicle is inherently dangerous or poorly made.

“Instead, it reflects a commitment by car makers to continuously monitor vehicle performance in real-world conditions and implement improvements,” it said.

Another aspect of vehicle safety recalls that motorists need to be aware of is that all recall work is completed at no additional cost to the owner.

“Every aspect of a factory recall, including parts, diagnostic testing, and specialised labour, is fully covered by the vehicle manufacturer,” explained NADA.

“Car owners are never charged for work performed under an official recall campaign, regardless of whether the vehicle is a pre-owned model or out of warranty.”

It added that most technical reworks involve minor software updates or straightforward component swaps that are completed relatively quickly, with minimal inconvenience to the vehicle owner.

Automotive manufacturers also tend to make it easy for motorists to check if their vehicle requires any technical updates.

Most brands make use of dedicated recall-checking tools on their websites, where owners can enter their vehicle’s unique Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) to instantly view any active recall notices.

This number can be found either on the licence disc or registration documentation. Alternatively, the 17-character code can be found in a number of common spots on the vehicle itself, including the dash.

“Motorists can also call or visit any franchised dealership for their vehicle’s brand to have their VIN checked against the manufacturer’s recalls database,” explained NADA.

“If an open recall is identified, the dealership will order the required parts if necessary and schedule a convenient appointment to complete the work free of charge.”

Samuel said that taking five minutes to check your VIN on a manufacturer portal or reaching out to a local franchised dealership ensures your vehicle benefits from the latest engineering refinements.

He added that this keeps motorists and their families safe on the road.
