The new Ford Mustang Mach 1 – “the most track-focused Mustang yet” – is now available in South Africa.
Only 90 units of this limited-edition Mach 1 will be sold, at a starting price of R1.18 million.
The company said this Mustang introduces an enhanced powertrain and aerodynamic features – providing 22% increased downforce and a 0.4-second quicker 100km/h acceleration time than the standard Mustang GT.
Reward to rev
Ford said the 5.0-litre, V8 engine in the new Mach 1 has been tuned to provide the ultimate “reward-to-rev” characteristics.
A new open-air induction system, intake manifold, throttle system, fuel injection system, and engine oil adaptor went into the development of the Mach 1’s motor, and it now generates 338kW at 7,250rpm and 529Nm at 4,900rpm.
This can be paired with either a Mustang GT350-derived six-speed manual or 10-speed automatic transmission.
“Both transmissions benefit from a dedicated oil cooler, rear axle cooling system, and limited-slip differential for consistently optimised transfer of torque to the road,” said Ford.
The manual variant will accelerate to 100km/h in 4.8 seconds, while the automatic boasts a 4.4-second sprint.
Aerodynamics
Alongside the uprated engine, the Mach 1 features distinctive “race-derived” styling.
This is provided by a new front splitter, two-piece side grilles, undertray, single-deck rear spoiler, and performance rear diffuser – all of which are functional components.
“The lengthened undertray also uses dedicated fins to direct cooling air to the brakes, which themselves feature a higher specification brake booster for consistently responsive braking performance,” said Ford.
An electronically-controlled MagneRide 2 adjustable suspension system is fitted, too, in addition to stiffer front springs, a stronger roll-bar, 19-inch alloy wheels, and Michelin Pilot Sport 4 tyres.
A Track Apps feature will then give the owner access to a deploy accelerometer, acceleration timers, and launch control.
Features
Every new Mach 1 comes with an all-digital, 12-inch instrument cluster that is configurable via a leather multifunction steering wheel.
A bespoke dashboard with the Mach 1 badge and chassis build number are added to the front, while leather sports seats, an active valve performance exhaust, orange brake calipers, and 4.5-inch exhaust tips are included.
Entertainment is then taken care of by the SYNC3 infotainment system and a 10-speaker B&O sound system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto support.
