SVI Engineering has developed a new anti-riot armour kit that can be fitted to the Toyota Hilux single cab bakkie.
The fully-converted Hilux is built to withstand bullets from AK47 assault rifles, and carry up to eight people.
According to SVI, the applications for this anti-riot Toyota include mining security, moving of guards, controlling riot action, and extracting people out of dangerous areas.
“The Hilux solution provides a nimble and reliable alternative compared to large, older-generation armoured personnel carriers at an affordable price,” said SVI.
To build the anti-riot Toyota Hilux, the single cab cabin is protected by B6 Stopgun armour which covers the glass, body, and roof surrounding the occupants.
A canopy is then manufactured from armoured steel, providing B4+ ballistic protection.
The unit bolts to the chassis of the vehicle and also provides six seats with seatbelts, windows with gun ports, an escape hatch, and an aircon at the rear.
According to SVI, this adds protection against assault rifles with 7.62×51 mm rounds for both the cabin and canopy.
Construction time for the cabin takes roughly seven weeks, while the canopy takes around six weeks to complete.
As part of the homologation process, a suspension upgrade is provided and roadworthy testing for the brakes, side-slope, and cabin visibility was done at the Gerotek test facility.
“The vehicle passed the criteria and is homologated to a GVM of 3,499kg to allow drivers with a standard car licence to drive the anti-riot Hilux,” said the company.
Run-flat tyres can also be ordered as an extra, it said.
The starting prices for the SVI anti-riot Toyota Hilux single cab conversion kits are as follows:
- B6 Stopgun cabin armour – R223,000 excl. VAT
- B4+ riot-control canopy – R271,000 excl. VAT
This pricing excludes the cost of the base Toyota Hilux, and SVI provides a 1-year/50,000km armour warranty with the purchase.
“The client is welcome to provide their own Hilux single cab bakkie for the conversion process,” said the company.
