Limited-edition Porsche 911 Targa launched – Pricing and photos

For the 50th anniversary of the Porsche Design department, the marque has launched the limited-edition 911 50 Year Porsche Design Targa.

The special Targa pays homage to the iconic designs of Ferdinand Alexander (F.A.) Porsche, the founder of the Porsche Design department and designer of the first 911.

The 50 Year is based on the Targa 4 GTS and will only be available in a limited run of 750 units.

The new 911 50 Year Porsche Design Targa is only available in plain black – or optionally, Jet Black Metallic – as this was the colour of the very first Porsche Design product, the Chronograph 1 wristwatch.

Platinum accents on the Targa bar and side decals were then chosen as these elevate the dark paintwork “in the same way chrome details used to,” said Roland Heiler, managing director at Design Studio F.A. Porsche.

The special edition is further equipped with the same wheels as the 911 Turbo S, 20 inches at the front and 21 at the rear, also painted in satin Platinum.

Additionally, the brake callipers and main features of the Sport Design package are painted in black, and exclusive 50th anniversary badges are found on the side slats.

The cabin was equally as inspired by heritage as the outer shell, featuring chequered Sport-Tex centre panel seat inserts with black leather sides, and Slate Grey contrast stitching.

A Porsche Design Subsecond clock with red highlights is also fitted on the dash, along with the 18-way electrically-adjustable Adaptive Sports Seats Plus.

Rounding off the finer details are Slate Grey seatbelts and 12 o’clock marker on the GT Sports steering wheel, brushed aluminium door entry guards, embossed 50th anniversary logos on the headrests, and a silver 911 badge with a limited edition number on the dash.

F.A. Porsche’s signature accompanies the silver 911 badge, and can also be found on the lid of the centre storage compartment.

Based on the Targa 4 GTS, the 50 Year Targa features a 3.0-litre, six-cylinder, turbo-petrol motor generating 353kW and 570Nm.

The standard transmission is an eight-speed Porsche dual-clutch (PDK) automatic, but a seven-speed manual with “a shorter gear lever and very short shift action” is also available on this special edition.

In automatic guise, the all-wheel-drive Targa 4 GTS sprints to 100km/h in 3.5 seconds and reaches a top speed of 307km/h.

Porsche’s Active Suspension Management system is included as standard in the 50 Year, too, as are the high-performance brakes from the 911 Turbo and a sports exhaust system.

Thanks to GTS-specific tuning and the omission of certain areas of interior insulation, this exhaust system “ensures an even more emotive sound experience,” said Porsche.

The Porsche 911 50 Year Porsche Design Targa is now available in South Africa at a starting price of R2,949,000.

This includes a 3-year/100,000km Driveplan.
