The new Alfa Romeo Tonale is expected to launch in South Africa towards the end of 2022.
“The Alfa Romeo Tonale is in the planning for South Africa and planned for late 2022,” Alfa Romeo South Africa told TopAuto.
What to expect
While the South African specifications for the new Alfa Romeo Tonale have not been revealed, the SUV’s European brochure provides a good picture of what to anticipate.
In this region, the Tonale will be offered in Super, Ti, and Q4 specifications – with three engines fitted throughout the range.
The entry-level motor is a 1.6-litre, diesel engine producing 97kW and 320Nm, paired to a six-speed, dual-clutch automatic transmission that drives the front wheels.
Next in line is a 1.5-litre, turbo-petrol engine in conjunction with a 48-volt “P2 electric motor”, which connects to a seven-speed automatic gearbox that drives the front wheels.
The combination offers either 97kW or 119kW, depending on the model, said Alfa Romeo.
Finally, a plug-in hybrid, four-wheel-drive powertrain that delivers 205kW is standard in the Tonale Q4.
This lets the range-topper sprint to 100km/h in 6.2 seconds and provides a maximum all-electric driving range of 80km.
On a 7.4kW charger, the Q4’s battery takes two and a half hours to charge to 100%.
In addition, the hybrid powertrains bring cutting-edge abilities such as silent start in full-electric mode, regenerative braking, e-Boosting for increased torque on the wheels, e-Queueing for completely silent traffic jam navigation, and e-Parking for silent parking maneuvers.
A raft of standard features then come as standard in the European Tonale models.
This includes a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, 10.25-inch Android infotainment display, built-in Amazon Alexa voice assistant, and NFT digital certificates for a “positive impact on its residual value.”
Pricing
No pricing for the Alfa Romeo Tonale in any region has been announced thus far.
The Tonale is expected to slot in below the Alfa Romeo Stelvio, which currently has a starting price of R1,188,900.
