New BMW X1 revealed – With an all-electric flagship

BMW has revealed the new X1 range, which will be headlined by the all-electric iX1.

Both models will reach South Africa over the course of the next 12 months – sporting revised exterior designs, enhanced standard features, and an overhauled interior.

Everything new

Compared to the outgoing model, the third-generation BMW X1 provides a more modern design with slimmer headlights, a larger and almost square kidney grille, chrome strips in the lower air intake, and “X-shaped lines radiating out to the sides.”

From the back, it also boasts a sleeker rear window, stronger horizontal lines, reshaped LED lights, and more flared wheel arches to achieve a more muscular stance.

All model variants sit on 18-inch alloys as standard, whereas 19-inch and, for the first time on an X1, 20-inch wheels can be selected, too.

Further customisation options come in the form of the M Sport style pack along with two solid, and ten metallic shades of paint.

Inside, the slender instrument panel and large curved infotainment system are the most noticeable elements of the cabin’s redesign.

The fully-digital control hub fitted to each model comprises a 10.25-inch information display and a 10.7-inch driver’s screen, which together brings support for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, BMW Maps, the intelligent personal assistant, the Digital Key Plus, an interior camera, and a personal eSIM for 5G connectivity.

A new “floating” armrest, housing a wireless charger as well as an airbag, is another highlight, and the reshaped seats are available in both Sensatec artificial leather and Vernasca leather upholsteries.

Additionally, the new rear bench features three full-size seats to enhance occupant comfort, and the boot now supports 540 litres of cargo, which grows to 1,600 litres with the rear backrests folded.

Standard features for the third-generation BMW then include dual-zone climate control, a Sport leather multifunction steering wheel, rain-sensing wipers, cruise control, automatic LED headlights, four USB-C ports, front collision warnings, and a rear-view camera with reverse parking assistant.

On top of this, an extensive options list is open to buyers of the new X1, with features such as Sports seats, electric seats with massaging functions, ambient lighting, a panoramic sunroof, the mirror package, a Harman Kardon stereo, rear-seat fore-and-aft adjustment, matrix LED lights, adaptive M suspension, an electric trailer hitch, augmented reality navigation, and over seven advanced driver-assistance features.

X1 engine line-up

At launch, one petrol and one diesel engine will be available for the standard X1.

The sDrive18i specification is equipped with a three-cylinder petrol engine producing 115kW, achieving a combined fuel consumption of 6.5l/100km.

In the sDrive18d, a four-cylinder diesel unit pushes out 110kW at a combined consumption rating of 5.0l/100km.

These link up with a seven-speed, double-clutch Steptronic transmission as standard, and drive is channeled to the road via the front wheels.

Wider tracks and reworked underpinnings which now also include near-actuator wheel slip limitation further guarantees improved handling characteristics, traction, and directional stability when compared to the outgoing generation, said BMW.

iX1 specifications

Driving the all-new iX1 xDrive30 is the fifth-generation eDrive technology that sees a high-voltage battery positioned flat within the crossover’s underbody, powering two electric motors bolted to the front and rear axles.

The environmentally-friendly setup generates a maximum output of 230kW and 494Nm, allowing for a brisk 0-100km/h time of 5.7 seconds.

A driving range of 413-438km is on the books, too, whereas “highly-efficient charging technology” and the latest-generation charging software taken from the i7 ensure fast charging times, said BMW.

South African launch

The following specifications of the new BMW X1 are launching in South Africa:

  • BMW X1 sDrive18i
  • BMW X1 sDrive18d
  • BMW iX1 xDrive30

“The all-new BMW X1 and iX1 will be available in South Africa from the fourth quarter of 2022 and the first quarter of 2023, respectively,” said BMW South Africa.

“The BMW X1 xDrive23i and BMW X1 xDrive30e will not be offered in South Africa.”
