Toyota South Africa has announced that more units of the iconic GR Yaris have been allocated to the local market after the initial 190 models sold out in the country in 2021.
Unlike before, though, the base model is no longer being sold and the hot hatch is now only available in Rally guise, with improved standard specifications.
It’s still powered by the same 1.6-litre, turbo-petrol engine generating a tremendous 198kW and 360Nm.
This is fed to the ground via a bespoke four-wheel-drive system and a six-speed manual gearbox with a short throw, making for a blistering 0-100km/h sprint in 5.5 seconds and a top speed of 230km/h.
The Yaris Rally also boasts a limited-slip differential on both axles, performance-tuned suspension, reworked power-steering assistance, 356mm grooved brakes, and 18-inch BBS forged-alloy wheels shod with Michelin Pilot Sport 4s tyres.
Standard features
The new GR Yaris Rally retains all the high-end features from last year, and further gains rear parking sensors as well as a rear-view camera as standard.
In addition, buyers of the rally-inspired Toyota can expect leather/Alcantara front sports seats, full leather rear seats, a heads-up display, keyless entry and start, automatic LED lights with daytime running lights, rain-sensing wipers, active noise cancellation, dual-zone climate control, a 4.2-inch multi-information driver’s display, and a 7-inch infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
The Toyota Safety Sense driver-assistance suite is equipped at no additional cost, too, bringing ABS with brake assist, hill-assist control, automatic high-beam adjustment, lane-trace assist, and adaptive cruise control.
Price
The new Toyota GR Yaris 1.6T GR-Four Rally has a South African starting price of R761,200.
This includes a 3-year/100,000km warranty and a 9-services/90,000km service plan.
Toyota South Africa also confirmed that the new Yaris is again being sold in a limited run, but did not reveal how many units will be offered.
According to June’s new vehicle sales statistics, at least 15 models have already found new owners.
