Cars that are trending in South Africa right now

The Toyota Corolla Cross is the most widely-searched-for car in South Africa, with an average of nearly 50,000 monthly searches dating back to August last year.

This is according to data provided by Auto Trader UK, which has analysed Google search to see which cars motorists in various countries are most interested in.

The data provides an interesting look into South Africa’s motoring scene, as there are a wide array of searches for vehicles in all different shapes and sizes.

The Corolla Cross taking the number one spot isn’t all that surprising, given its popularity among local consumers with it being one of the best-selling cars in the country.

What’s arguably more interesting is the fact that many of the cars in South Africa’s top 20 most searched for are not actually high-volume affordable units.

Instead, many of the results are taken up by high-end luxury vehicles and supercars, showing which models locals are truly interested in.

BMW is a fan-favourite brand, as evidenced by the fact that seven of the 20 vehicles listed come from the German automaker.

This includes the highly-popular X1 SUV, M3 sedan, and Z4 roadster, as well as the extravagant 7 Series and i7, and even upcoming models like the anticipated M2 and XM.

Aside from the Corolla Cross, Toyota’s next most-searched-for entry is none other than the GR Corolla – showing that South Africans have an interest in its sportier designations.

From the supercar manufacturers, the Ferrari Purosangue has caused a stir with its recent reveal as the Italian carmaker’s first SUV, and the Maserati GranTurismo, Mercedes-AMG One, Rolls-Royce Spectre, and Aston Martin Valhalla have also seen a lot of interest.

The Honda Civic Type R continues to hold sway among many enthusiasts, too, and the reveal of the new VW Amarok has no doubt contributed to its high search history over the past year.

More affordable units to make the list then include the Nissan X-Trail, Mazda CX-60, and two cars from Renault – the classic Renault 5, which is being remodelled as an electric vehicle, and the new Austral hybrid.
