The official South African pricing for Toyota’s new GR86 has been listed, the two-door going for R698,100 in manual guise and R733,700 in automatic.
The GR86 is the evolution of the old GT86, now being adopted into the manufacturer’s sporty Gazoo Racing (GR) department hence the new moniker.
The new coupe was originally unveiled back in April 2021 and has since been undergoing homologation procedures before being launched locally.
Boxer performance
Under the long hood, the new GR86 gets a 2.4-litre boxer engine that generates 174kW and 250Nm channeling power to the back tyres via either a six-speed manual or six-speed automatic transmission.
Additionally, it sees a 50% improvement in chassis rigidity, a rear-mounted limited-slip differential, and a more aerodynamic shell featuring larger air intakes, front air outlets, side rocker panels, a ducktail spoiler, and 18-inch alloys that altogether lend the GR “superb front-end road-holding and rear-end stability,” said Toyota.
As a result, “handling across all speed ranges has been improved” and the 0-100km/h sprint time lowered by 1.1 seconds down to 6.3 seconds in manual, 6.8 seconds in auto, with top speed pinned at 225km/h and 216km/h, respectively.
Average fuel consumption for the sports car is reported at 8.8l/100km across the range, however.
It keeps nearly identical dimensions to the previous 86, too, standing 10mm lower at 1,310mm, the same width at 1,775mm, and 25mm longer at 4,265mm – and it now weighs 1,270kg, compared to 1,670kg before.
The GR’s interior has been thoroughly modernised and the new generation sports an 8-inch infotainment display with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a 7-inch digital instrument cluster, a multifunction steering wheel, dual-zone climate control, Ultrasuede and leather upholstery, heated front seats, automatic LED lights, keyless entry and start, and cruise control.
In terms of assistance features, the upgrades continue with ABS with brake assist, a reverse camera, blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, and hill-start assist across the range, whereas the automatic variant is further equipped with lane departure alert, adaptive cruise control, a pre-collision system, rear parking sensors, and automatic high beams.
