New Toyota GR Corolla – South African pricing and specifications
Toyota South Africa has listed the new GR Corolla on its website, showing that when it goes on sale, the hot hatch will be available in two specifications from a starting price of R816,500.
Driven by the most powerful three-cylinder engine in the world, the new Corolla will be available in limited numbers and offered in Core and Circuit trim levels.
Specifications
The new GR Corolla features the same 1.6-litre, turbo-petrol power unit as in the GR Yaris, uprated to generate a monumental 221kW and 370Nm.
The motor connects to a six-speed manual gearbox for a puristic driving experience and turns all four wheels via the GR-Four selectable all-wheel-drive system with three torque distribution settings – 60:40, 30:70, and 50:50.
The local arm of Toyota did not reveal any specific acceleration or top speed figures for its potent new GR car, but judging from other markets where it’s already on sale, the angry Corolla should eclipse 100km/h in around five seconds and reach a top speed of 230km/h or higher.
Standard fittings are plentiful for the GR Corolla, and buyers can look forward to bi-LED headlights with automatic high beams, keyless entry and start, GR Sport fabric upholstery, a GR-branded multifunction leather steering wheel, dual-zone climate control, a 12.3-inch digital driver’s display, a 7-inch infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, six speakers, front and rear parking sensors, a reverse camera, adaptive cruise control, and lane-trace assist.
Setting the pricier Circuit model apart are a two-tone colour scheme, a carbon fibre-reinforced roof, a limited-slip differential, a heads-up display, and synthetic leather/suede seat covers.
The hatchback also boasts a much more aggressive look than its normal siblings courtesy of wider fenders, a GR-specific grille and bumpers, a triple exhaust outlet, unique 18-inch alloy wheels, and sizeable air vents at the front and back as well as on the side fenders.
