The most searched-for used cars in South Africa

BMW 4-Series

AutoTrader has released its latest Car Industry report for South Africa.

The report is based on data it collected between July and December 2020, and details the most searched-for used cars in the country.

Top 10 brands

On the brand front, BMW took top spot as the most searched-for brand, narrowly beating Mercedes-Benz.

“Interesting insight into the data shows that the lead in searches that BMW has traditionally enjoyed is getting narrower as consumers search and compare more brands in their consideration set,” stated the report.

“The top three most searched-for car brands in South Africa took 45% of all car searches, an increase of 11% year-on-year.”

The report stated that 15.4% of all car brand searches went to BMW, up from 12% previously.

Mercedes-Benz was in second place with 14.8% of all car searches, while VW took third spot with 14.3% of all car searches.

The table below from the AutoTrader report details the top 10 most searched-for brands during the period, based on the number of searches for each.

Top 10 models

While BMW took first place in the brand search rankings, the Toyota Hilux easily claimed top spot as the most search-for vehicle model in the country.

“As we entered national lockdown, double and single-cab bakkies attracted the most consumer attention,” stated the report.

The Toyota Hilux took up 4% of all model searches on the platform, followed by the VW Golf in second place – with 3.74% of all model searches.

The Mercedes-Benz C-Class claimed third place, while the BMW 3-Series took fourth spot.

The table below details the top 10 most searched-for models on AutoTrader during the period, based on the number of searches for each.
