Mazda has updated the Mazda 3 in South Africa, simplifying the model range while giving the remaining units new visual options and additional features.
The Mazda 3 line-up now consists of three units and two trim levels, with prices starting at R447,500.
What’s new
The Mazda 3 is designed to look both modern and sporty, thanks to a low roofline and clean body lines that give it a wide, powerful stance, said the carmaker.
The facelifted version features a new exterior colour – Ceramic White – which joins the existing palette choice of Arctic White, Deep Crystal Blue, Jet Black, Machine Grey, Polymetal Grey, Snowflake White Pearl, Soul Red Crystal, and Platinum Quartz.
The Japanese automaker has now also applied its “Kodo” design philosophy to the interior, resulting in a spacious environment with a more streamlined centre console.
The update means that all trim levels are equipped with USB Type-C ports and a wireless phone charger, and the 8.8-inch infotainment screen now supports Android Auto and wireless Apple CarPlay.
This is in addition to items already included in the base Dynamic models, which consist of 16-inch alloy wheels, automatic LED headlights, daytime running lights, manual air conditioning, an electronic handbrake, auto-folding side mirrors, rain-sensing wipers, rear privacy glass, keyless start, cruise control, a leather multifunction steering wheel, hill assist, rear parking sensors, eight speakers, a 7.0-inch driver’s monitor, and a heads-up display.
Opting for the flagship Astina model will throw in larger 18-inch alloy rims, paddle shifters, keyless entry, dual-zone climate control, a 10-way electronically-adjustable driver’s seat with memory function, black or red leather upholstery, a powered sunroof, a 12-speaker BOSE stereo, onboard navigation, rear cross-traffic alert, blind-spot monitoring, and a reverse camera.
Engines
The front-wheel-drive Mazda 3 is available with two engines comprising either a 1.5-litre or a 2.0-litre, naturally-aspirated petrol powerplant, depending on the trim level.
The 1.5-litre unit found on the Dynamic produces 88kW and 153Nm and can be had with either a six-speed manual or automatic transmission, resulting in an average fuel consumption of 6.0l/100km.
The 2.0-litre drivetrain, meanwhile, is reserved for the Astina and is exclusively paired to a six-speed auto, providing an output of 121kW and 213Nm and a consumption of 6.3l/100km.
