WeBuyCars (WBC) and the Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) have entered into a “groundbreaking” public-private partnership intended to improve vehicle registration and change of ownership processes in South Africa, announced transport minister Sindisiwe Chikunga.
The initiative will officially be launched on 22 August at the WBC Dome in Randburg, Gauteng, at which the minister will also share the progress made with the enhancement of online services on its Natis platform, as well as additional services that will be offered to WBC and future business partners.
“This partnership is a first of its kind and the RTMC intends it to be the first of many as it continues to seek solutions to make transacting on the Natis system seamless for both members of the public and business stakeholders,” said the minister.
Chikunga will only reveal the full workings of the RTMC’s new agreement with WBC at the launch of the initiative, at present, she said it will “usher in a secure, paperless, business-to-business environment to allow the motor vehicle trading and financing sector to transact seamlessly on the Natis system.”
The RTMC has already piloted the solution with WBC to test its efficiency and is happy with the results, with the system now ready for full implementation, according to the minister.
Big drive to improve Natis
In May, the Department of Transport (DoT) corrected the schedule of service fees for online car licence and registration applications through the Natis system that has been in effect since January 2022, bringing down the costs of two important services for motorists while clearing up confusion about previous pricing.
The headline changes made were as follows:
- Online application, issuing, and delivery of a registration certificate – From R530 to R330
- Online notification of change of ownership of a motor vehicle by current title holder – From R530 to R330
This signifies a reduction of R200, or 38%, for both payments.
In addition, the DoT also corrected the “online booking” fee to accurately reflect what is included and excluded from the payment, as before, the department included the processing and issuing fees along with the booking fee in the schedule, making it appear as if each booking would cost R250 before the licence was processed.
This has now been corrected to show its true cost of R22, with the remainder of the fees remaining unchanged.
