Mahindra has just unveiled an electric concept version of its popular Thar 4×4, showcasing the brand’s foray into the world of electrified transport.
The electric vehicle (EV) was revealed this week at the company’s Futurescape event in Cape Town, alongside the next-generation Global Pik Up concept.
Mahindra has stated that it will bring its battery-electric cars to South Africa including the all-new “Thar.e” when it reaches production form, but that it does not yet have a timeline mapped out for when this will be, according to Engineering news.
A new contender
The electric Thar comes from Mahindra Electric Automobiles Limited (MEAL), a subsidiary of the automaker based in India.
Still in its concept or “vision” phase, the vehicle boasts a “one-of-a-kind” modular construction using the brand’s INGLO EV platform, with a body that incorporates up to 50% recycled fabrics and plastics so as to promote a philosophy of sustainability, according to the manufacturer.
“Creating Vision Thar.e was about embracing a future that’s bold and innovative. Our design forges a new path, standing as a testament to Mahindra’s commitment to cutting-edge creativity and breakaway thinking,” said Pratap Bose, the Chief Design Officer at Mahindra.
“We have maintained the adventurous spirit and off-roading capability that is quintessentially Thar, but we have crafted a unique identity in the world of electric SUVs.”
In creating the concept model, the team focused on creating an exterior with straight geometric surfaces that allowed for innovative features like near-vertical windows, which maximize the interior space, said the carmaker.
The interior is intended to feel minimalist while still functional, thanks to an uncluttered environment that is kitted out with items like a central media screen that is able to pivot to face different users.
As it is still very early in the development process, there are currently no details regarding its performance aspects such as its battery size, charging speed, and maximum range.
“Vision Thar.e is a testament to innovation and a pioneering design philosophy that is uniquely Mahindra and distinctively global. Thar.e caters to the adventurer in all of us, craving exploration without compromise,” said Veejay Nakra, the President of Mahindra.
“Aligned with the global movement towards responsible consumption, our focus on sustainable materials resonates with the broader shift towards being planet positive, ensuring that Thar.e is both timeless and timely.”
