JAC has finally launched the new T9 in South Africa, having first announced the double cab all the way back in December 2022.
The new bakkie is positioned as the flagship of the carmaker’s local catalogue, with prices ranging from R529,900 for the base 4×2 unit up to R649,900 for the range-topping 4×4.
The high rider is currently available in four specifications with a single engine between them, but more powertrains are scheduled to launch in the country in 2024, including petrol, plug-in hybrid, and battery-electric units.
Performance
For now, the T9 is exclusively equipped with a 2.0-litre, four-cylinder, turbocharged diesel engine which produces a total of 125kW and 410Nm.
The range is split between two trim levels, Lux and Super Lux, with a rear-wheel and four-wheel-drive option for each, but in all cases, the bakkie is paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission.
This setup allows the JAC to achieve an average fuel consumption of 7.8l/100km, which translates to a driving range of roughly 1,000km on its 76-litre tank, said the automaker.
Regarding its practical aspects, the T9 can tow 3,500kg and carry 1,000kg in the load bed, the latter measuring 1,520mm by 1,590mm by 470mm.
Built on the company’s third-generation light commercial platform with ladder-frame suspension, the double cab itself is 5,330mm long, 1,965mm wide, and 1,920mm tall, with a wheelbase that stretches 3,110mm.
It has driving modes for Sport, Normal, Eco, and Snow, and the 4WD derivatives use a part-time system with a low-range setting and a rear differential lock as standard.
The bakkie also boasts a turning radius of 6.2 metres, a ground clearance of 210mm, an approach angle of 27.0 degrees, and a departure angle of 23.0 degrees.
Features
Regardless of the version you opt for, the new JAC comes with automatic xenon headlights, LED daytime running lights and tail lamps, fog lights, black wheel arches, and two-tone 18-inch alloy wheels.
Safety-wise, it is fitted with six airbags, traction control, vehicle dynamics control, electronic stability control, hill assist, ABS with a brake override system, electronic brake-force distribution, tyre-pressure monitoring, rear parking sensors, and a rearview camera.
On the T9 Lux, standard equipment then includes keyless entry and start, leather seats, a multifunction steering wheel, cruise control, automatic climate control, an electronic hand brake, an electronically-adjustable driver seat, a 7.0-inch instrument cluster, a wireless phone charger, front and rear USB ports, and a 10.4-inch infotainment screen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
Upgrading to the Super Lux adds front parking sensors, welcome lights, auto-folding side mirrors, a 360-degree camera, a sliding sunroof, rain-sensing windscreen wipers, heated front seats, an electronic front passenger seat, privacy glass, and an auto-dimming rearview mirror.
