Omoda is gearing up to introduce the C5 GT in South Africa in a limited run of only 100 units.
The GT boasts a higher power output than the rest of its C5-badged siblings and is completed with sporty exterior upgrades, however, its full equipment sheet and pricing are yet to be revealed.
Omoda is the luxury subdivision of Chinese carmaker Chery and only recently launched its first product in the country, the standard C5, with the more luxurious C9 to follow before the end of 2023.
Everything we know about the C5 GT
The new C5 GT comes fitted with a 1.6-litre, turbocharged petrol engine under the hood with the potential to produce 145kW and 290Nm – as opposed to the 1.5-litre block in the rest of the C5 line-up that puts out 115kW and 230Nm.
As a result, the newcomer reaches 100km/h in as little as 7.8 seconds.
Omoda hasn’t revealed which gearbox the GT will make use of, but like the rest of the range, it may very well channel drive to the front wheels via a continuously variable transmission.
However, it’s worth mentioning that the Chery Tiggo 7 Pro Max and 8 Pro that are currently sold in South Africa use the same 1.6-litre powerplant married with a seven-speed automatic transmission, so it’s a possibility that the Omoda will use this cog swapper, too.
As the available information on the new crossover is still thin on the ground, we are not entirely sure what sort of equipment and features it will bring.
Judging from the pictures, the athletic C5 will sport gold exterior highlights with matching wheels presumably in an exclusive design, a unique front diffuser, GT badging, and a sizeable tailgate spoiler.
More likely than not, the GT will be based on the top-spec C5 Elegance, meaning buyers can look forward to amenities along the lines of electric seats, leather upholstery, two 10.25-inch displays on the dash, an 8-speaker Sony sound system, dual-zone climate control, a rear-view camera, a wireless charger, ambient cabin lighting, a 360-degree camera, adaptive cruise control, and automatic LED lights.
As for pricing, we expect the GT will slot in at the top of the C5 family with a price tag north of the current flagship’s R509,900.
