Suzuki has finally launched the highly-anticipated Jimny five-door in South Africa after months of waiting.
Having introduced the fourth-generation model in 2018, the Japanese carmaker has now added two more doors to the fan-favourite SUV while also updating other aspects of the vehicle to make it even more capable off-road.
Prices for the larger Jimny start at R429,900, making it R39,000 more expensive than the base three-door.
Features
The addition of two more doors has lengthened the Jimny, though not by much as the automaker wanted to retain the compact nature that the 4×4 is known for.
It is 340mm longer for a total of 3,965mm, which has the dual benefit of an extended wheelbase going from 2,250mm to 2,590mm, and a bigger boot of 211 litres – 126 litres more than the three-door.
Its other dimensions, such as height, width, and ground clearance, are all the same at 1,670mm, 1,645mm, and 210mm, respectively.
The new model’s changes go beyond just the larger stature, however, as the Jimny now comes standard with a chrome grille, a 7.0-inch touchscreen (9.0-inch on the GLX) with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a reverse camera, rear parking sensors, and a rear 12V socket.
This is in addition to the equipment already found on the three-door, such as 15-inch alloy wheels, electric door mirrors, a multifunction steering wheel, two airbags, aircon, electric windows, ABS, hill assist, and electronic stability control.
Furthermore, the Jimny five-door GLX units receive automatic LED headlights and rain-sensing wipers, cruise control, automatic climate control, six airbags, auto-folding side mirrors, and a leather steering wheel.
Also exclusive to the five-door are three new colours: Sizzling Red Metallic, Celestial Blue Pearl Metallic, and Granite Grey Metallic.
Engine
The architecture of the Suzuki is still fundamentally the same, with all seven models in the expanded line-up using a 1.5-litre, naturally-aspirated petrol engine.
This provides 75kW and 130Nm, which helps to drive all four wheels thanks to the brand’s AllGrip all-wheel-drive system with a low-range transfer case.
For the transmission, there is either a five-speed manual or four-speed automatic, though it’s important to note that the five-door GL is only sold as a manual.
Fuel consumption then works out to 6.3l/100km for the manual and 6.8l/100km for the automatic – the same as the three-door – as the conversion has only added a little over 100kg to the car’s mass.
Also worth highlighting is the fact the 4×4’s off-road angles have changed with an approach of 36 instead of 37 degrees, a breakover of 24 instead of 28 degrees, and a departure of 47 instead of 49 degrees.
The turning radius is 0.8m longer than before, too, and the company has reinforced the rear propeller shaft and front suspension to support the longer body.
