New BMW 2 Series in South Africa – Pricing revealed

The pricing for the new BMW 2 Series has been uncovered ahead of its imminent launch in South Africa.

According to our sources at Duoporta Vehicle Information Specialists, the updated coupe will now start at R858,395.

The new 2 Series is expected to appear on our roads any day now and fans will likely be able to catch a peak of the two-door at this weekend’s BMW M Fest at Kyalami Grand Prix Circuit in Midrand, Gauteng.

Features

The facelifted 2 Series now comes standard with the M Sport package, which adds extra-large front air intakes, flared side skirts, and a rear apron with vertical reflectors and a diffuser-like insert.

Up front, the surround of the signature kidney grille is now completed in pearlescent chrome, and the side skirts and rear apron are body-coloured rather than black this time around.

The flagship M240i also features M-specific inclusions, such as gloss black inserts for the side mirrors, a black lip spoiler, trapezoidal tailpipes, and an exclusive optional Zandvoort Blue paint scheme.

In a similar vein, the M Sport units are fitted with 18-inch alloy wheels while the M240i gets 19-inch double-spoke rims with a bi-tone finish.

Shifting to the interior, the M Sport treatment means the 2 Series now comes standard with an M flat-bottom leather steering wheel with paddle shifters and a red 12 o’clock marker, as well as anthracite headlining.

The dashboard is dominated by a dual-screen setup comprising a 12.3-inch digital driver display and a 14.9-inch infotainment system running the automaker’s latest iDrive 8.5 operating software.

The media screen comes with BMW Maps navigation and an Intelligent Personal Assistant, and supports wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

Many of the car’s inputs have been simplified with several buttons being removed in favour of the touchscreen, which now has a shortcut bar for quick-access functions.

The coupe also features heated Sports seats with electronic adjustment, which can be replaced with M bucket seats with integrated headrests at request.

By default, the BMW uses a velour-like M Perfomtex upholstery, but owners can swap this out for perforated Sensatec in black-and-cognac or quilted Tacora Red, or Vernasca leather with red accents.

Assistance items on the 2 Series consist of front-collision warning, lane-departure warning, cruise control with a braking function, a speed limiter, traffic sign recognition, and a Parking Assistant with front and rear distance sensors.

The list of extras for the coupe includes a heads-up display, adaptive cruise control, adaptive headlights with high-beam assist, a Harman Kardon stereo, an electric sunroof, a tow bar, and a wireless charger.

Engines

The 2 Series is available with three different powertrains – the 220i, 220d, and M240i.

Starting with the 220i, this is a 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol unit with an output of 135kW and 300Nm.

This is enough to give the two-door a 0-100km/h acceleration time of 7.5 seconds and a top speed of 235km/h.

Combined with an eight-speed automatic gearbox, the BMW achieves an average fuel consumption of 6.3l/100km.

Next is the 220d, which is a 2.0-litre turbo-diesel block good for 140kW and 400Nm.

The added power means the diesel units can sprint to 100km/h in 7.0 seconds, but they cap out at the same top speed of 235km/h.

Thanks to its alternate fuel source, the 220d consumes just 4.8l/100km.

Last up is the performance-themed M240i, which is the only model to feature the xDrive all-wheel-drive system instead of a rear-wheel-drive setup.

The M240i runs on a 3.0-litre turbo-petrol engine, giving it an impressive reading of 285kW and 500Nm.

As you’d expect, it has a much faster 0-100km/h time of 4.3 seconds and can hit a higher max speed of 250km/h.

This does make the flagship the thirstiest of the group though, with an average usage stat of 8.0l/100km.

The 2 Series now comes standard with M Sport suspension and brakes, and the M240i can be optionally fitted with an Adaptive M chassis with controlled shock absorbers and variable sport steering.
