New Mitsubishi Outlander Sport launched in South Africa – Pricing and features

Mitsubishi has launched the long-awaited Outlander Sport in South Africa, a nameplate that has never before been sold in the country.

The Outlander Sport will potentially replace the entry-level ASX in the local market, however, this remains to be confirmed.

The new crossover is available in four specifications spanning GL, GLS, Aspire, and Exceed trim levels with prices starting at R429,990.

What you get

The new Outlander Sport in GL spec comes with 17-inch gray alloy wheels, LED headlights with bi-functional LED daytime running lights, keyless entry, a multifunction steering wheel, manual airconditioning with driver-knee and rear-seat vents, a height-adjustable driver seat, eight-step reclining rear seats, a rear-view camera, hill-start assist, and a six-speaker sound system.

Behind the steering wheel sits a 4.2-inch multi-info driver’s display, while an 8-inch infotainment system with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and WebLink takes care of connectivity and media.

Upgrading to the GLS then adds blind-spot monitoring (BSM) with lane-change assist as well as rear cross-traffic alert into the mix.

Meanwhile, the penultimate Aspire derivative is delivered with 18-inch two-tone alloys, automatic headlight activation, rain-sensing wipers, push-button start, dual-zone climate control, a leather steering wheel and gearshift, synthetic leather seat wrappings, a 12.3-inch central screen, an 8-inch digital gauge cluster, cruise control, a wireless charger, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, rear parking sensors, tyre-pressure monitoring, and an electric tailgate with height memory.

On top of this, the flagship Exceed further sees an eight-speaker Yamaha stereo.

Interestingly, the Aspire gets BSM but not lane-change assist, whereas the Exceed is fitted with the former and latter – just like the GLS.

The entire Outlander Sport family is equipped with a 1.5-litre petrol motor churning out 77kW and 141Nm, and power is channeled exclusively to the front axle via a continuously variable transmission.

The setup enables the crossover to attain 100km/h in 13.6 seconds and climb to a top speed of 175km/h.

Mitsubishi highlighted that its newcomer has suspension that was specifically developed for ASEAN roads, thus “making it well suited to South African conditions.”

It also benefits from the integration of Active Yaw Control that autonomously adjusts drive between the wheels to improve controllability, traction control, engine control, and power steering control.

It further boasts a generous-for-the-segment ground clearance of 222mm as well as approach and departure angles of 21.0 and 30.5 degrees, respectively, allowing it to traverse tough conditions with ease.

The Aspire and Exceed provide four drive modes, too, comprising Normal, Wet, Gravel, and Mud.
