Most affordable hatchbacks in South Africa

There are 10 different hatchbacks that can be bought for less than R300,000 in South Africa.

While hatchbacks continue to be the ambassadors for affordable transport, there aren’t many options left in South Africa’s wallet-friendly sector.

Popular B-segment models like the VW Polo now cost a minimum of R373,800, but there are still a handful of options from Toyota, Suzuki, Hyundai, Renault, and VW that can be bought on a budget.

The cheapest small car on sale right now is the Toyota Vitz, which clocks in at just R178,800.

Interestingly, the Vitz is noticeably cheaper than the Suzuki Celerio, which it shares a platform with.

This is because Toyota recently slashed the price of the Vitz, making it R100 cheaper than the previous entry-level car – the Suzuki S-Presso.

The S-Presso clocks in at R178,900, while the Celerio starts at R188,900.

The only other passenger car in the country that costs less than R200,000 is the Renault Kwid, which now asks for a minimum of R196,999.

Other affordable hatchbacks include the Korean duo of the Hyundai Grand i10 and the Kia Picanto, and the Suzuki Baleno and its badge-engineered twin, the Toyota Starlet.

The two most popular choices in South Africa right now are the Suzuki Swift and VW Polo Vivo, which retail for R224,900 and R271,900, respectively.

The Swift sold an impressive 2,053 units in April, while the Vivo moved 1,366 units.
