Best-selling bakkies in South Africa

The new bakkie market saw tremendous sales in March 2026 despite multiple warnings over massive diesel price hikes.

While AutoTrader reported a noticeable decline in demand for pre-owned diesel vehicles, this evidently did not affect the new-car segment, as the Toyota Hilux sold an incredible 4,118 units last month.

This is according to a report by Cars.co.za, based on industry sales data from Naamsa.

Another surprise is that the Ford Ranger was knocked down to third place, as the Isuzu D-Max experienced a massive jump of over 1,000 sales to reach 3,008 units.

The Ranger then came third with 2,074 units, and the Mahindra Pik Up came fourth with 1,037 sales.

Fifth place went to the GWM P-Series with 785 purchases, making it the last model to clear 500 units.

VW sold 466 Amarok examples, and Nissan saw 380 Navara units make their way off the dealer floor.

Eighth and ninth place were taken by the Toyota Land Cruiser 79 and JAC T-Series, which sold 371 and 266 units, respectively.

The last model to crack the top 10 was the Foton Tunland series, which moved 242 units.

In total, the top 10 bakkies sold 12,747 units, representing 21.9% of the 58,060 vehicles sold in South Africa last month.
