Hatchbacks remain a popular choice for motorists in South Africa, even if the high price of fuel is causing many to hold off on purchasing a new car.
The most popular model in April 2026 was the VW Polo Vivo, which sold 1,876 units.
This is according to a report by The Citizen, based on NAAMSA data.
While this was enough to make the Vivo the third best-selling vehicle in the country last month, it’s a notable step down from the 2,258 units it sold in March.
Second place went to the Suzuki Swift with 1,556 sales, while the Hyundai Grand i10 claimed the third spot with 1,374 units.
The VW Polo came fourth with 817 units, and the Toyota Vitz closed out the top five with 772 sales.
Another Toyota, the Starlet, landed in sixth place thanks to 733 buyers, and the Hyundai i20 came seventh with 426 sales.
The last three units to crack the top 10 include the Renault Kwid, Tata Tiago, and Suzuki Baleno, which sold 362, 346, and 337 units, respectively.
In total, the top 10 hatchbacks sold a combined 8,599 units, representing 17.2% of the 47,979 vehicles sold in South Africa last month.
