Land Rover is looking for these SUVs in South Africa

The National Consumer Commission (NCC) has alerted motorists to a product recall affecting certain Land Rover and Range Rover models in South Africa.

The NCC was informed of the recall by Jaguar Land Rover South Africa, which concerns possible safety defects with some of their SUVs sold in the last seven years.

The recall applies to select Model Year 2020 to 2027 Land Rover Defender, Land Rover Discovery, and Range Rover units sold locally between 2019 and 2026.

The NCC has not clarified how many units are affected in each product line.

However, it noted that the affected Defender units were sold between April 2019 and June 2026.

The Discovery units were sold between July 2020 and June 2026, and the Range Rover units were sold between September 2020 and June 2026.

“According to the supplier, a concern has been identified with the connector to the driver’s airbag at the clockspring,” said the NCC.

“Over time, the connector may experience fretting corrosion, which can increase resistance in the driver’s airbag circuit. This may result in the driver’s airbag failing to deploy when required to do so.”

Owners of the affected vehicles are urged to take their cars to their nearest authorised Jaguar Land Rover dealership for an inspection and immediate repairs.

The repairs will be carried out at no cost to the consumer.

Another recall in South Africa

This is the latest in an increasingly long list of vehicle recalls issued in South Africa.

A few days ago, Ford and Stellantis issued separate recalls for vehicles sold locally within the last few years.

Ford Motor Company of Southern Africa informed the NCC of the recall of 633 Ford Transit and Ford Tourneo Custom models sold in South Africa between 1 March 2025 and 20 May 2026.

At the same time, Stellantis South Africa informed the commission of its own recall of 82 Jeep Grand Cherokee models that were made available from 2021 to 2023.

Over 40,000 vehicles have already been recalled in 2026.

The Automobile Association of South Africa has condemned these recalls, stating that it reflects poorly on the companies’ quality control safeguards.

“The scale of these recalls reveals a systemic failure and weakness in vehicle pre-market quality assurance, manufacturing oversight and regulatory verification,” the AA said.

“Although vehicle recalls currently serve an essential role in addressing latent safety defects, they are inherently reactive in their nature and therefore inadequate as a safeguard.”

It has been argued that South Africa’s vehicle recall system has proven that most notices arrive too late, and only once defective vehicles are already in circulation, being driven by unsuspecting owners.

“Instead of preventing danger, the recall system responds to it, exposing drivers, passengers and pedestrians alike to avoidable risks,” the AA declared.
