Chery has announced pricing for the upcoming Q, its first all-electric car in South Africa, which is scheduled to appear just over a month from now.
The Chinese carmaker confirmed that the new Q will arrive in South Africa between the end of August and the start of September, and that prices will initially range from R350,000 to R400,000.
This makes it one of the most affordable electric vehicles (EVs) in the country, directly competing with the R339,900 Geely E2 and the R341,900 BYD Dolphin Surf.
“The Q has been developed to make electric driving a realistic option for more South Africans,” said Verene Petersen, National Marketing and Communications Manager at Chery South Africa.
“Its compact dimensions make it well suited to the city, but it still offers the space, range and everyday practicality buyers expect from their primary vehicle.”
“With pricing starting at R350,000, it represents an important step in making electric mobility more accessible locally.”
The Chery Q will be one of the first EVs sold by the Chery Group in South Africa, alongside the Jaecoo J5 BEV and the iCAUR V23 and 03T.
What to expect
The company stated that the Q will feature a 90kW electric motor paired with a 42.7kWh battery, which provides a range of 400km on the NEDC cycle.
Converting this figure to the WLTP standard more commonly used in South Africa gives the hatchback a range of 340km.
The vehicle itself is 4,195mm long, 1,811mm wide, and 1,570mm high, with a 2,700mm wheelbase. The boot has a capacity of 375 litres, which expands to 1,450 litres when the rear seats are folded.
Since it’s an EV, the Chery also has a 70-litre “frunk” for additional storage, and there are several smaller compartments inside the cabin.
While the automaker did not confirm the full lineup, it did state that the Q will feature either 16-inch or 17-inch wheels, depending on the trim level.
It will also have semi-flush door handles, two-tone exterior mirrors and a “floating C-pillar” design. It has a closed-off grille to denote its electric underpinnings, and Q-shaped LED headlights.
“Each square headlight chamber incorporates a curved lighting element that gives the vehicle a friendly expression,” said the manufacturer.
Inside, the hatchback has a dual-tone dashboard, contrast-colour air vents and a flat-bottom steering wheel. It also has a column-mounted gear selector to free up space in the centre console.
On the dash, you’ll find an 8.8-inch digital instrument cluster, as well as a 15.6-inch 2.5K central infotainment screen powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8155 processor.
Chery is offering a pre-order package for the Q that includes a 7-year/150,000km vehicle warranty, a home charging wallbox, and portable charging equipment.
“Customers will also be able to choose between a charging card of equivalent value to their holding deposit or a deduction from the vehicle’s purchase price,” it said.
“A complimentary electric tailgate upgrade will form part of the offer.”
Additional information on the new Q, such as its full spec sheet and derivative pricing, will be announced closer to its launch window in late August.
