5 cars you can buy for less than R4,500 per month

Cash-strapped car buyers shopping for new cars instead of used ones have only a handful of options in South Africa’s budget segment, where cars cost less than R4,500 per month to finance.

Vehicles in this segment are becoming more popular as motorists look to alleviate some affordability pressures, especially now that petrol prices and interest rates could be hiked at the same time.

According to a calculation by TopAuto, buyers looking to spend R4,500 or less per month will need to set a price cap of R209,000 or less.

Assuming there is no deposit paid as part of the purchase agreement, no balloon is agreed upon as part of the final settlement, and the vehicle is financed at the current prime lending rate of 10.5% for five years.

This figure leaves 10 options, although five of these are derivatives of the Suzuki S-Presso, so TopAuto considered only the distinct base models for this list.

That means South Africa’s cheapest car, the Renault Kwid, makes its way onto the list with a price tag of R178,799, or R3,843 per month.

For this price, buyers can expect a naturally aspirated 1.0-litre petrol-powered hatch with a five-speed manual gearbox that combines for 50kW and 91Nm, and an average fuel consumption of 4.9l/100km.

The rest of the cars on the list boast similar figures, including the Suzuki S-Presso, Toyota Vitz, Suzuki Celerio, and Tata Tiago.

The latter, however, boasts the biggest motor, a 1.2-litre petrol block and a five-speed manual gearbox, producing 63kW and 113Nm, yet still maintaining a 5.0l/100km average fuel consumption.

Those willing to stretch the budget to the limit might even consider the top-spec Kwid or S-Presso models in their manual guises.

The Suzuki S-Presso S-Edition demands R205,900, or R4,426 per month, while the Renault Kwid 10th Anniversary Edition asks for R209,799, or R4,509 per month.

While these two top-spec options share their platform and powertrains with their budget variants, they have been fitted with additional features and more upmarket trims to improve safety and comfort for buyers.

Five budget hatchbacks for South Africa’s cash-strapped buyers

Buyers looking for the cheapest cars on sale in South Africa right now will have to choose from the five base-spec hatchbacks below, or could even consider some of their more upmarket derivatives under R210,000.

It does need to be said that these monthly repayments do not include the additional vehicle ownership costs, including insurance, maintenance costs, and, of course, fuel.
