20 most popular cars in South Africa right now

Bakkies continue to play a leading role in South Africa’s vehicle sales, with two models making it into the top five.

The Toyota Hilux is the best-selling vehicle in the country, moving an impressive 3,881 units in August 2026.

This is according to a report by The Citizen, using data from the Automotive Business Council.

Another bakkie, the Ford Ranger, came third with 2,373 units, while the VW Polo Vivo was only a few units ahead with 2,379.

Fourth place went to the Chery Tiggo 4 (and Tiggo Cross), which sold 2,297 units, and the Suzuki Swift closed out the top five with 2,152 sales.

A third bakkie, the Isuzu D-Max, came sixth overall with 2,005 customers, which was followed by the Toyota Corolla Cross and Hyundai Grand i10 with 1,489 and 1,461 units, respectively.

Another Toyota, the Starlet, took ninth place with 1,359 purchases, and the Suzuki Ertiga finished 10th with 1,317 units.

The next five models to crack the top 15 include the Haval Jolion with 1,261, the Toyota Starlet Cross with 1,015, the Suzuki Fronx with 970, the Toyota Urban Cruiser and Vitz, which both sold 871 units.

VW’s Polo hatchback came 16th with 837 sales, after which came the Omoda C5 and Jetour T2 with 823 and 802 sales.

The Toyota Rumion sold 777 units, and the Kia Sonet snuck into the top 20 with 766 units sold.

In total, the top 20 passenger and light commercial vehicles accounted for 29,706 units, or 51.3% of the 57,898 cars sold in South Africa last month.
