New special edition BMWs coming to South Africa – What to expect

German luxury carmaker BMW is marking the Nürburgring’s 100th anniversary with six BMW M vehicles and three BMW Motorrad M motorcycles launching next year, including limited models coming to South Africa.

The track, nicknamed “the Green Hell” by Scottish racing legend Sir Jackie Stewart, opened on 18 June 1927, and still hosts a multitude of motorsport events today.

To honour the legendary track and its motorsport heritage, BMW is presenting a joint anniversary edition, the “100 Jahre Nürburgring” range, based on technical developments from BMW Motorsport.

Three of each model, comprising BMW M2, M3 Sedan, M3 Touring, M4 Coupé, M5 Sedan, and M5 Touring, will be made available in South Africa.

Similarly, BMW’s motorcycle division, Motorrad, will make one of each of the BMW M 1000 RR, M 1000 R, and the M 1000 XR available in our market.

“The Nürburgring is much more than just a racetrack for us – it is a second home for BMW M. All our production vehicles are put through their paces on the Nordschleife,” said Frank van Meel, CEO of BMW M.

“With the Edition 100 Jahre Nürburgring, we celebrate our long-standing and successful relationship with the Nürburgring.”

Markus Flasch, CEO of BMW Motorrad, added that the Nordschleife has been part of the DNA of M models for years.

“With our special models for the 100th anniversary of the Nürburgring, we pay tribute to a place that has made motorsport history and, to this day, shapes the connection between racetrack and road like no other,” he said.

Orders for the “100 Years of Nürburgring Edition” design are expected to be available from January next year.

What to expect

A common feature across all nine 100th anniversary models is the track-inspired Nürburgring Green paint finish, developed exclusively for these models, as well as edition- and model-specific elements.

The 100 vehicles feature designs that incorporate a special “100 Years” logo, “Nürburgring since 1927” wording, and a silhouette of the Nürburgring.

Depending on the model, the BMW M cars feature these graphics on the front doors, C-pillar, and rear side sections, while the vehicles also feature edition-exclusive stripes on the roof.

On the BMW M2, M3 Sedan, M4 Coupé, and M5 Sedan, they run across a carbon roof, while on the BMW M3 Touring and BMW M5 Touring, they run across a steel roof.

The Nürburgring Green, light grey, and black colour scheme, model-dependent green accents on wheels and kidney frames complete the new look.

The special motorcycle models feature painted fuel tanks with the Nürburgring silhouette and airbox covers in the anniversary design with individual “one of 100” markings.

They also feature carbon wheels with accent stripes in Nürburgring Green, an Alcantara-style seat with embroidered “100”, as well as black components such as the rear swingarm and rear frame.

Inside the M cars, buyers can expect a black interior with contrasting green and white stitching, an M Alcantara steering wheel with matching stitching and a 12 o’clock marker.

In terms of powertrains, the 100th anniversary models feature two options, namely the inline six-cylinder BMW M Ignite used in the BMW M2, BMW M3, and BMW M4 since July and August 2026.

The M5 Sedan and M5 Touring models are fitted with the M Hybrid Drive high-performance plug-in hybrid (PHEV) powertrain.
