Toyota is exceptionally popular with South African motorists, with eight of its cars appearing in the nation’s top 20 best-sellers list.
Naturally, the Hilux dominated the charts in October 2026 with 3,820 units, putting it over 1,000 units ahead of the second most popular option, the VW Polo Vivo, which sold 2,695.
This is according to a report by The Citizen, using data from the Automotive Business Council.
Up next is the Ford Ranger, which overtook the D-Max once again to become the nation’s second favourite bakkie choice, adding 2,381 units to the industry’s total.
The Suzuki Swift and Chery Tiggo 4 Pro then took fourth and fifth place with 2,344 and 1,924 units, respectively.
The Toyota Corolla Cross sold 1,723 units, which was followed by the Isuzu D-Max with 1,644, and the Hyundai Grand i10 with 1,556.
The last model to crack the top 10 was the Haval Jolion with 1,343 customers, after which came the Kia Sonet with 1,321 sales, and the Suzuki Ertiga with 1,234.
Another Suzuki, the Fronx, moved 1,118 units, and the Toyota Vitz and Starlet came 14th and 15th with 1,091 and 1,081 units.
The final models in the top 20 include the VW Polo with 991 units, the Toyota Urban Cruiser with 939 units, and the Toyota Fortuner, Toyota Rumion, and Jetour T2 with 894, 777, and 753 units.
In total, the top 20 passenger and light commercial vehicles accounted for 31,240 units, or 50.47% of the 61,890 cars sold in South Africa last month.
