Pre-owned hatchbacks you can buy for R200,000

South Africa’s demand for cars is on the rise, yet supply is struggling to keep up, making the second-hand market your best bet at finding an affordable car.

The country’s used car market has seen incredible growth within the last six months, which is largely attributed to global supply chain shortages limiting the production and import of new vehicles.

With thousands of pre-owned cars available online, we looked at AutoTrader’s hatchback marketplace to see what kind of bargains could be found for those looking for an affordable city car under R200,000.

The cars

There were 8,466 hatchbacks listed on AutoTrader under our R200,000 benchmark at the time of writing.

However, according to MotorHappy, a reasonable mileage ranges between 15,000-20,000km per year, with anything beyond this considered excessive.

Therefore, to find the best possible deals in this sea of affordable hatches, we limited our search to models that were less than five years old and had a mileage under 100,000km.

There were exciting finds, including a 2022 Fiat 500 Cult, a 2022 VW Polo Vivo, and a 2021 VW Polo.

For those who were hoping to buy a Ford Figo before it was discontinued, a handful of units, including a 2021 Freestyle 1.5 Trend, are also on sale starting at R145,000.

The Suzuki Swift was another common sighting, with a standout listing being one for a 2021 Swift GL Auto going for R191,900.

Other recurring models included the likes of the Renault Kwid, Toyota Agya, Kia Picanto, and Hyundai Atos.
