Lamborghini Urus breaks sales records

The Lamborghini Urus broke a record this month as the best-selling car in the shortest time frame in the manufacturer’s history.

Since its debut in 2018, the Urus set impressive records for the Italian supercar maker year on year, reaching a total of 16,000 models sold by the end of 2021.

Now midway through 2022, the 20,000th unit rolled off the production line finished Viola Mithras with black brake calipers and a panoramic roof, with this example being delivered to a customer in Azerbaijan over the coming weeks, said Lamborghini.

World’s first super SUV

At the time of its launch, the Lamborghini Urus was touted as being the world’s first Super SUV courtesy of a 4.0-litre, twin-turbo, V8 engine delivering a tremendous 478kW and 850Nm.

This means the Urus had one of the highest power ratings of its vehicle class, allowing it to achieve a 0-100km/h time of just 3.6 seconds and an incredible top speed of 305km/h.

But the Lamborghini was no stranger to extreme off-roading, either, offering six driving modes comprising Strada, Sport, Corsa, Off-road, Sand, and Snow for traveling across locales such as Iceland’s rocky landscapes and the Italian Alps.

This also enabled it to accomplish impressive feats such as setting a record for high-speed driving on ice while on Russia’s Lake Baikal, as well as scaling the world’s highest driveable road, the Umling La Pass in India, at 5,882 metres.

Instant hit

Originally unveiled as a concept at the Beijing Motor Show in 2012, the Urus became an instant hit with motoring enthusiasts, with more than 70% of initial orders at launch coming from first-time Lamborghini buyers, said the premium manufacturer.

“The Urus is a perfect complement to our super sports model ranges, providing a luxurious and high-performance daily drive for those who identify with our authentic Italian brand,” said Lamborghini CEO Stephan Winkelmann.

“[It] has won numerous awards and accolades and it has been the ‘Unlock any Road’ protagonist in events worldwide, from the highest roads to the most extreme off-road environments.”

Lamborghini’s production site in Sant’Agata Bolognese has also grown exponentially since the Urus went into production, according to the Italian automaker.

The factory’s floorspace has doubled and a dedicated paint shop has been added to cater to customer requests, with blue, violet, graphite, and pearl being the most popular colours.
